Have you seen Kim Kardashian West‘s latest Instagram post yet? The KKW Beauty founder took to the social media platform on June 22 and shared some behind-the-scenes footage of her preparation for the 2019 Met Gala, where she wore a custom Thierry Mugler dress that cinched her waist to proportions that had never been seen before. The post generated some praise, but many fans criticized it for promoting “unhealthy” habits and body goals.

A refresher on Kim Kardashian West’s 2019 Met Gala look

The reality star showed up to the March 6, 2019, event with her husband Kanye West, wearing a fitted, nude dress decorated with hanging beads and sequins. The look was meant to emulate a “California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.”

It drew tons of attention and prompted several conspiracies, including that West had her ribs removed to fit the dress. She brushed off the rumors in a later interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, saying, “I don’t even know if that’s possible.”

She did, however, admit that a lot of work went into the look. She noted that she wore an extremely tight corset to shape her waist in that way, explaining: “I have never felt pain like that in my life. I’ll have to show you pictures of the aftermath when I took it off — the indentations on my back and my stomach.”

She also said she had to take special lessons to learn how to breathe in the garment.

Kim Kardashian West talks more about the event in a new Instagram post

The post features a video of West wearing the body-squeezing corset and posing in a mirror.

“Just found this in my phone from my special trip to London last year to meet w Mr. Pearl,” she wrote in the caption. “I wore a corset like this for the Met Ball for my @manfredthierrymugler Camp look but the corset was misplaced that night 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I want it so badly preserved for my archive that I flew to London to have another made for the archive.”

The 2020 Met Gala has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but West noted that she does have something up her sleeve for her 40th birthday in October. “Can’t wait to show you the LOOKSSSS we’ve been cooking up,” she continued.

Fan reactions to Kim Kardashian West’s Instagram post

West’s post received over 1 million likes, with people like Kimora Lee Simmons and Simon Huck gushing over the post. But there were some who took major issue with it, including some of her most diehard fans.

“I love you Kim, but it’s not healthy to promote completely unrealistic body types. You’re better than this. Are you really going to teach your daughters that their bodies are only beautiful kid surgically altered,” one fan wrote, referencing West’s daughters, North, 7, and Chicago, 2.

Another person said, “That’s not a good look. It looks unnatural and unhealthy. As a public figure you should think about the message your sending to girls. Is this what beauty is? …. no it is not.”

“You just don’t get it. You do some pretty amazing things for minority groups and people in need, and then you negate that work with something like this,” said another. “What sort of role model are you for daughters? If you can’t see that there is something wrong with this then you need help.”

And that’s just the brink of the backlash. So far, West has not addressed any of the comments.
