The Kardashians’ father, Robert Kardashian, made headlines back in the 1990s after joining O.J. Simpson’s legal defense team. But by the time his family rose to fame in the mid 2000s, Robert had died from complications related to esophageal cancer.

Though Robert never saw his kids flourish on their reality television show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the Kardashian children were certain to make sure their dad was remembered. They’d often tell sweet stories about him — including Kim Kardashian West once revealing the one meal that brought them even closer together just before his death.

The Kardashian family often talks about Robert on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’

The popular E! reality show first aired back in 2007, only about four years after Robert’s death. Though Robert was never able to see the show, he had made a name for himself in another way years earlier. Robert was a member of O.J. Simpson’s legal defense team when the former football player was on trial for the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

Robert’s children did highlight their father on the show; Khloé often told stories about her dad, and the kids would reminisce about memories with their father growing up in their Beverly Hills home. Kris has had several moments where she’s become emotional thinking about her late ex-husband.

Kim Kardashian West once revealed the meal that brought her and her dad closer

Robert Kardashian was diagnosed with esophageal cancer back in July 2003. His condition progressed quickly, and Robert died only two months after his diagnosis in Sept. 2003. Three years later, the family was in talks to do a reality show, so Robert’s death was still fresh in his family’s mind when they began filming.

In season 3, episode 1, Khloé is sentenced to 30 days in jail from charges related to a DUI. As she awaits jail time, her family heads to a local spot for breakfast, where Kim tells a sweet story of a breakfast dish that brought her and dad closer: Her cream of wheat.

“My trick is you gotta cover the whole bowl with sugar, and then you mix it,” Kim said. “My dad like, would not eat, like towards the end. He couldn’t swallow food .. And all he wanted was my cream of wheat.” Kim goes on to say that her dad could “hardly talk” but that he would point to her and whisper that she bring him some of her special cream of wheat. It was a moment that stuck with her even years later.
