Kim Kardashian West isn’t afraid to make a fashion statement, and the bigger a reaction it gets from the public, the better. Her recent outfit for the Met Gala had everyone talking, but it turns out that the look had even more glamour than what we saw. Even though she didn’t show any skin, Kardashian West still had a full face of makeup in place.

Kim Kardashian West and the Met Gala

In the past, Kardashian West has opted for both outrageous and classic looks for the Gala. But regardless of how much she’s pushed the fashion boundaries, she’s never played it too safe.

According to E!, the first time she attended the event for the fashion elite, she was pregnant with her first child, North. She wore a fitted, floral dress by Givenchy. It raised some eyebrows and got some adverse reactions. However, she was only getting started.

In the years since, Kardashian West has worn simple blue satin, a frothy, fitted lace gown that left little to the imagination, a silver dress that some compared to a disco ball, and a corset dress that looked like she’d just stepped out of the water. That last dress was so tight that she couldn’t sit down or go to the bathroom.

This year she topped them all in a Balenciaga outfit. She was covered in matte black fabric from head to toe, with a sweeping train and a ponytail that flowed almost to the floor. Her entire head and face were shrouded in the tight, opaque black fabric. The fact that anyone knew who she was at all is a testament to her star power.

An unseen makeup look

If you think the unusual face-covering means Kardashian West took the opportunity to skip her usual full face of makeup, you’re mistaken. Teen Vogue reports that her makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, posted pictures on Instagram of the makeup look he gave her for the event.  He went with a flawless matte foundation, accompanied by an understated smoky eye. He kept her lipstick neutral for a sophisticated effect.

But why did Kardashian West need makeup at all if you couldn’t see her face? She probably slipped her mask off occasionally during the evening so that she could eat or drink something. Kardashian West isn’t someone who likes to let people see her naked face very often, and certainly not at one of the most significant fashion events of the year.

What did her outfit mean?

Of course, the Met Gala isn’t just an opportunity for stars to wear their prettiest clothes. Each year the event has a theme, and the outfits are supposed to tie into that concept. This year’s Met Gala theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” How did Kardashian West’s striking look mesh with this concept? According to US, the reality TV star has explained the thought process behind her outfit, and it’s not as complex as you might think.

“What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!” she captioned her Twitter post of the look. Fans aren’t sure if that explanation tells the whole story, especially since her soon-to-be ex-husband Kanye West was seen in similar outfits before the Met Gala.

Regardless of what statement Kardashian West may have been making, her all-black ensemble won’t be forgotten soon. And now that it’s known that she was wearing makeup underneath the mask, fans want to know what setting spray magic could have kept it in place.
