Kristen Bell and Dax Shepherd have one of those marriages that fans like to hold up as “relationship goals.” The two are adorable together, and they’re happy to share some of their most delightful (and brutally honest) moments on social media, creating plenty of laughs and authenticity.

Add their two adorable daughters to the mix, and you have a family that’s definitely a fan favorite. Recently, Shepard opened up about the “hardest part” of getting married to Bell, and the details reveal even more of the depth of this relationship.

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell had a rocky start

The pair have been very open about the rocky start to their relationship and the work that they’ve both put in to improve themselves and their connection to one another. In Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert, he has sat down with his wife for a few interviews revealing details of their time together. In fact, she was his very first guest, and the episode opened with them bickering with one another.

Shepard has also revealed that he didn’t believe in marriage before he met Bell. The pair met in 2007 — which was just a few years after Shepard famously fought off his addiction and got sober.

They were engaged in 2009, but they did not get married until 2013 because they wanted to wait until the fight for marriage equality was won in their state of California. When the did get married, Shepard wanted a prenuptial agreement. Bell agreed, but then Shepard realized he was making a mistake and decided against it. He wanted to show that he had trust in their relationship.

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell often share family moments

One way that Shepard and Bell have really connected with fans is by being open and honest about the great and not-so-great moments of marriage and parenting. They’re not afraid to share the ups and downs, and fans are really impressed with their ability to show that things are not always easy.

In fact, Shepard and Bell have been particularly open about the struggles of parenting during the pandemic. “We’re getting along good with the kids and we’re getting along good with adults we’re friends with. This has been stressful for momma and dada,” Shepard explained.

He went on to say that he and Bell were “at each other’s throats,” and Bell quickly agreed. When Katie Couric, who was interviewing the couple, suggested they spend some time apart in separate areas of the house, Bell quipped, “He’s too big, Katie. He’s too loud and too big. He’s everywhere.”

These moments of brutal honesty have become a signature part of the couple’s public persona.

Recently, Shepard appeared on Whitney Cummings’ podcast Good For You. On the show, he opened up even more about his views on marriage and how they had to change for him to marry Bell.

“That was the hardest part about getting married for me: I was like what leverage do you have left anymore?” he shared. “Another wrinkle was that I fundamentally did not believe in the institute of marriage.

He went on to reveal that he had been in a long-term relationship before meeting Bell and had planned to build a family with that woman, but it didn’t work out. He wanted to make sure that Bell felt secure and happy in their relationship, so he started to reconsider his views.

“At a certain point, I was like she wants this really bad and this will make her feel safe,” said Shepard.

The actual marriage was frustrating for the pair because the jeweler who sold Shepard the engagement ring spilled the details to the press, so they didn’t get to announce things in their own way and time.

While they may have taken an unconventional route to marriage that put some of their preconceived notions to the test, this pair has shown their fans what the work of building a family looks like.
