How ‘Spencer’ will show Princess Diana in a different light

Princess Diana’s story has been recreated and retold in various ways. Season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown asserts the Princess of Wales’ challenges as a new, young royal, whereas The Windsors: Inside the Royal Dynasty explores her story through archival footage. So how will Spencer be different?

According to USA Today, Stewart explained the film as “a dive inside an emotional reimagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”

The plot takes place over the course of three days in 1991 during Christmastime. These few days are crucial for the Princess of Wales as she decides to end her marriage.

Why is Kristen Stewart enraged as Diana in the unreleased ‘Spencer’ clip?

The unreleased clip is a scene between Stewart and co-star Jack Farthing as Prince Charles. According to Entertainment Weekly, the couple argues on opposite sides of a pool table in a billiards room. Stewart’s Diana bangs on the pool table, enraged, but not only from their conversation—The clip suggests that the two have deeper problems aside from this spat.

Despite the infidelity implications, the character Charles is more concerned over Diana’s lack of conformity to royal expectations. He says the perturbing line, “We are given tasks; you have to be able to make your body do things you hate.”

He then explains to his wife why she must embrace this standard. “Yes, for the good of the country,” he says in the clip. “For the people, because they don’t want us to be people.”

As Charles flicks the eight ball to Diana, his chilling last line is, “I’m sorry, I thought you knew.”

Next, NEON and Topic Studios played a teaser trailer with Stewart’s Diana struggling with her luxurious lifestyle. The actor only speaks a few words throughout the teaser.

Kristen Stewart feels ‘protective’ over the Diana Spencer character

The Clouds of Sils Maria star provided her perspective on the pressure to step into Princess Diana’s shoes on Jimmy Kimmel Live. She appreciates the pressure and said it “makes me stand in attention in the best way.”

She also explained her emotional connection to the character and the real-life Princess of Wales.

“I didn’t grow up with her maybe in the same way; I was really young when she passed away…It’s hard not to feel protective over her. I mean, she was like so young. I mean, everyone’s perspective is different, and there’s no way to get anything because, like, what is fact in relation to personal experience?”

Stewart later emphasized that those involved with the production “also love [the Princess of Wales].”

Kimmel asked if the Adventureland actor watched videos of Princess Diana to prepare for the role. Stewart agreed and said, “I fall asleep with that in my head.”

Spencer will debut at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, 2021, and will premiere in the U.S. on Nov. 5, 2021.
