When Kourtney Kardashian announced that she would be stepping away from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, fans were shocked if not necessarily surprised.

After all, the announcement came after months of public feuding between her and sister Kim Kardashian about whether or not Kourtney was pulling her weight on the show. On top of that Kourtney Kardashian’s appearance on the show was part of a strained triangle between her, former beau Scott Disick, and his then-girlfriend Sofia Richie.

The pressures all added up, and it made sense that she might want some time out of the spotlight to focus on her own life.

However, fans are now pretty sure that the entire thing was fake, just one more ruse to drum up viewership for the show.

Anyone who was watching the 17th season of KUWTK could see that trouble was brewing between Kourtney and Kim Kardashian. The show had frequently focused on arguments between the pair, and much of the debate centered on whether or not Kourtney was adequately pulling her weight when it came to creating the show.

The whole point of a reality TV show is that fans get to see the behind-the-scenes happenings of the family, but Kourtney had been insisting on more and more privacy for her family.

In particular, Kourtney was concerned about her children and how being on camera might impact them since they were getting old enough to fully feel the ramifications. Kim, meanwhile, pointed out that when Kourtney pulled back and kept her family moments out of the spotlight, it meant that there was more slack for the other sisters — especially Khloé and Kim since the younger Jenner sisters have different contracts — to pick up.

In order to make sure the show has enough content to air, each of the stars needs to provide glimpses into their lives. The tension between these competing needs was getting thick enough to see.

The drama ended with a physical fight

Eventually, all of this drama spilled over into a physical altercation between the sisters. Teased in the promo for the Season 18 premiere, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian come to blows. Kourtney accused Kim of having a “narrative in her mind” about Kourtney not working hard, and then she said “But also, if I didn’t want to work my a*s off and I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, that’s f*cking fine!”

She then threw her drink at her sister. Kim got some blows in herself, slapping Kourtney twice before the tumble was over.

Eventually, Kourtney decided she needed to take a break from the show. “I need a break and I don’t want to film anymore. I have three kids that are my priority more than the show. What I’m saying is I’m getting to the point where I’m not happy. Everyone has their breaking point. Life is short. It’s not all about filming this show,” she explained as she justified her decision.

Fans think Kourtney Kardashian is still on the show

Despite the dramatic announcement of her departure, fans are not convinced that Kourtney Kardashian is actually leaving the show. In a Reddit thread discussing Kardashian’s cover for Vogue Arabia, the topic of whether or not she is actually gone from the reality TV series came up.

In the cover story, Kardashian apparently expressed that she is “free” from the “toxic” television show. When one fan asked if she was really quitting, another responded, “nah, she’s in the promo for the rest of the season. [I] don’t know why she’s milking this two-week break she took a year ago.”

Some expressed disappointment that she’d be sticking around: “She is so passive-aggressive and rude to everyone in her family. I’ll be more inclined to watch the show if she leaves. I really like everyone else on the show.” Others agreed and pointed out that if the environment was toxic, it was because Kardashian helped make it that way: “she played a huge role in the toxic environment.”
