Since she first splashed on to the scene in 2008 with her debut album, The Fame –Lady Gaga has been known for her eccentric style and dramatic hairstyles. Though the songstress’ look has been much tamer in recent years, in the early days of her career, her costumes and looks were as talked about as her incredible voice.

In fact, in her debut film, A Star is Born where she stars opposite Bradley Cooper –most people were stunned to see the toned down bare-faced pop star as Ally — a struggling singer who falls in love with Jackson Maine (Cooper), one of the biggest country stars in the world. Before her big screen debut, many of us had no clue what Gaga’s natural hair even looked like.

This is what Lady Gaga’s natural hair looks like

In A Star is Born –Lady Gaga wore her natural brunette tresses to play Ally. The Joanne singer’s natural locks are dark brown and just slightly longer than shoulder length. Though the singer had worn her natural hair numerous times in the past, many people have had trouble differentiating between her natural hair and her numerous wigs.

If you recall, when Gaga was first on the rise in Hollywood she was blonde–which many people assumed was her natural hair color. Additionally, she wore so many different wigs, massive costumes, and accessories that weighed down her petite frame that we often had no clue what Stefani Germanotta (Gaga’s given name) even looked like under all of the makeup.

Why does Lady Gaga always wear wigs and extensions?

Many people in the entertainment industry including actors, models, and artists wear wigs and extensions to protect their natural hair from the excessive styling and heat tools that are used continuously on their hair. Singer Ariana Grande had such a traumatic experience from excessively coloring her hair red at the beginning of her career that she always opts to wear a high ponytail. Back in 2013 –Lady Gaga opened up about why she always wore wigs and massive costumes. BBC reported,

[Gaga] told fans she had survived “some really tough times” and explained she had used “wigs and make-up” to “cover up the pain”.

When I didn’t feel strong enough to be me, I created someone else. And it worked … So here I am, the human underneath the wigs,” she said, removing her headpiece and bobby pins to reveal a tousled brunette bob. “This is my real hair.”

Over the years and as she’s gotten older –Lady Gaga has opened up more about struggling with fame and feeling used in the industry. She’s also learned how to say, “no” to things she does not want to do which in turn has helped her scale back with wigs and costumes and reveal more of herself. As Ally –Gaga genuinely connected with her audience which is why she is now nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award. No matter how she chooses to style herself, we’re just glad the Born This Way songstress can be her authentic self.
