‘Legacies’ season 3 was cut short

Legacies season 3 was supposed to be 20 episodes long. But due to pandemic-related delays, the season was cut short. And episode 16,  “Fate’s a B—-, Isn’t It?” ended up serving as the season 3 finale.

“The true end of what should have been the season is episode 20, make no mistake, much like last season,” showrunner Brett Matthews told Decider. “The season was built to be that. But in COVID times, we really built to every four episodes.”

“And so if the season weren’t going to end at episode 20, I am very happy it ends at 16 because it’s a real good one in that sense,” he added.

What is the ‘Legacies’ season 4 release date?

When Legacies returns this fall, it will pick up with the final four episodes of season 3. The CW announced a premiere date of Thursday, October 14. But technically, that won’t be the season 4 release date.

If the show airs new episodes every week after October 14, fans will get what was meant to be the real season 3 finale on November 4. And if the show doesn’t take any breaks, the actual season 4 premiere will air on November 11.

What we know about the ‘Legacies’ cast for season 4

Legacies showrunners haven’t made any new season 4 casting announcements. But many of the show’s main stars — including Danielle Rose Russell, Aria Shahghasemi, Matthew Davis, Demetrius Bridges, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, and Chris Lee — will likely return next season.

And because of their characters’ growth in season 3, there is also a good chance that Omono Okojie, Courtney Bandeko, and Leo Howard will be back to play Cleo, Finch, and Ethan. However, Peyton Alex-Smith, who plays Rafael on the series, may not return as he recently landed a recurring role in the CW drama, All American: Homecoming.

What to expect when ‘Legacies’ returns with new episodes

In a chat with EW, Matthews teased what’s to come when Legacies returns with new episodes. For starters, he noted that fans will get to see more of Landon and Cleo as they head out on their joint mission to destroy Malivore.

“They’re very disparate people who have this complicated past,” Matthews said. “It’s two characters who know each other deeply but don’t really know each other and the exploration of that. Is a mutual goal enough to unite them together, and is it something that they can achieve together?”

The showrunner also suggested that MG will continue to look for a heroic purpose outside of the school. And he teased that the Sphinx prophecy will continue to loom in the background.

Luckily, in just a matter of months, fans will know exactly how season 3 ends and where season 4 is headed. Legacies will return on Thursday, October 14, at its usual 10 p.m. EST time slot.
