When a celebrity couple breaks up, fans expect that their social media accounts will be purged of the other. However, it took Liam Hemsworth a while to do this after his divorce from Miley Cyrus. Discover why he may have waited so long, and the separate reason his ex is under attack.

Cyrus and Hemsworth first began dating back in 2009 after meeting on the set of the romantic drama The Last Song. They got engaged in 2012, but broke it off in 2013. They later reconciled in 2016, and were married in December 2018.

Then came 2019. After attending a host of major events together, from the Vanity Fair Oscar Party to the Avengers: Endgame premiere (in support of Hemsworth’s older brother, Chris Hemsworth), the couple was seen spending less and less time together. They announced their split in August 2019.

She purged him from her Instagram, but he didn’t do the same

Hemsworth quickly filed for divorce, which was finalized in January 2020. Meanwhile, Cyrus began dating singer Cody Simpson. Not long into their relationship, she cleared Hemsworth’s image from her Instagram. Aside from photos like the above from the 2019 Met Gala, where his hand is in frame, the actor can’t be found on her social media profile.

Of course, Cyrus didn’t have a lot to clear out. She had previously removed all her Instagram posts from prior to December 2018. Why? She was doing what many artists these days do: Remove everything from the previous album before starting anew. With “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” a collaboration from Mark Ronson’s album, she said goodbye to her Younger Now era.

Hemsworth deletes all posts of Cyrus — except one

Meanwhile, Hemsworth’s Instagram account stayed relatively intact. He’s never been quite as active on social media as Cyrus, and obviously didn’t see a reason to purge the past. There were numerous photos of his ex on his page through Easter 2020, including one from their wedding.

But all that changed in mid-April 2020. The actor, who has been busy promoting his new Quibi series, Most Dangerous Game, removed every image related to Cyrus from his Instagram page. That is, except for the above heavily filtered photo of her kissing him on the cheek. Perhaps it didn’t register when combing through? But don’t expect it to stay up much longer.

When is Cyrus’ new music coming?

While Hemsworth was quietly deleting Cyrus from his account, she was dealing with another situation. Rumors began to spread on social media that Cyrus’ unreleased new music was about to leak. Her sister, Noah Cyrus, even commented, posting in her Instagram Story, “yall dont leak my sisters music before its out. no artist wants that done to them.” (It was later deleted.)

Cyrus is well aware that her fans (Smilers) want more music from her. After releasing She Is Coming, her scheduled first EP out of three, in May 2019, her follow ups were delayed considerably. Between her breakup with Hemsworth and her two vocal surgeries in late 2019, there’s currently no word as to when She Is Here is due out. But we can assume that once it does, there’ll be at least one song that has fans wondering, “Is this about Liam?”
