It’s hard to picture Prince Harry married to anyone else. Sure, he dated ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy for much longer than Meghan Markle, and most royal insiders predicted that he’d end up marrying her eventually. But then one stunning American actress came along and changed the course of history.

If their mutual friend hadn’t set them up, or if Meghan Markle had decided Prince Harry wasn’t “nice” enough, or even if she had fully realized the extent that fame would change her whole world, this story could have had a very different ending.

There was a brief shining moment in history when royal fans started speculating that perhaps Prince Harry might hook up with Kate Middleton’s younger sister, Pippa Middleton. Though that never happened, there are still people who believe things would be much easier if it had.

Rumors of a romance between Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton began in 2011

The first rumblings of a seemingly-perfect pairing between Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton began after everyone saw how perfect these two looked standing on the balcony at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding. The pair immediately denied the romance rumors and there’s no reason to think they were lying. However, royal fans couldn’t help but fantasize about a potential love affair.

“After the Royal Wedding, there was a discussion there was something romantic between Harry and Pippa, which was incorrect,” former royal editor Duncan Larcombe explained. “But it’s quite funny to think that Harry is now married to somebody who is quite similar in temperament, personality and bubbliness to Pippa.”

Pippa Middleton shares things in common with Meghan Markle

No two people are exactly alike. However, comparing Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle to Pippa Middleton is easy. Both women have dark hair and slim physiques. They also share similar interests, including health, wellness, and exercise.

One royal commentator even went as far as saying that Prince Harry chose a “Pippa Middleton replica” in Meghan Markle. While it’s debatable how much Pippa Middleton and Meghan Markle really have in common, one fact remains: his life would be much easier if he’d fallen in love with Pippa instead.

Forget all these royal feuds — if Pippa Middleton was married to Prince Harry, she’d probably be content to stay living at Kensington Palace and doing the whole double date thing with her sister and Prince William. She’d likely lean on Kate Middleton for advice on everything from royal life to raising babies.

Rumor has it that Prince Harry desired for Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton to become close friends, though that certainly hasn’t happened yet. If he’d married Kate’s sister, then things would be quite different between him and Prince William. Surely the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would have encouraged the union.

You can’t choose who you love

Ultimately, a relationship between Pippa Middleton and Prince Harry was never meant to be. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex both attended her wedding reception when she married hedge fund manager James Matthews (though Markle wasn’t welcome at the ceremony to keep attention on the bride).

Things may not be easier for Prince Harry now, but at least he has the love of his life by his side!
