Who is Lil Xan?

Nicholas Diego Leanos was born September 6, 1996, in Redlands, California to a Mexican family. During his youth, his family was poor, and they lived in motels. He dropped out of high school in 9th grade and stayed home for several years, selling drugs and working as a street cleaner. He then got into photography to support his rapper friends, until he had his camera stolen. Instead of getting a new camera, Leanos chose to start rapping.

He released a couple of mixtapes in 2016 before rising to stardom in August 2017, after the success of his single “Betrayed,” which peaked at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the chorus of the song, Leanos sings about the highly addictive medication, Xanax.

He admitted in a 2018 Genius interview that he struggled with a Xanax addiction for two years. After ending up in a hospital several times and fellow artist Lil Peep’s death, Leanos decided to quit the drug. Leanos then said he would change his stage name to his middle name, Diego, but the change hasn’t officially taken place as of yet.

In December 2017, he announced his Total Xanarchy tour which Billboard said sold out in five hours. He then released his debut album with Columbia Records, Total Xanarchy in April 2018. The album peaked at number ten on Billboard 200, and he also released a mixtape, Heartbreak Soldiers in July. Leanos announced in September 2018 that he is titling his next album “Be Safe,” because those were Mac Miller’s last words to him before Miller unexpectedly passed away.

Why do Tupac fans hate Lil Xan?

In February 2018, Leanos did an interview with Revolt TV, where they asked him what he thought about the late rap icon, Tupac. Looking uninterested in the topic, Leanos shrugged and said he felt like he made “boring music.” Rapper Waka Flocka Flame was one of the first celebrities to publicly call him out, tweeting that Lil Xan is banned from hip hop. Leanos responded saying he will continue rapping, however, will not participate in any more interviews.

At the end of March 2018, Leanos performed Tupac’s “California Love” at a concert in Pomona, California. He also said during a meet-and-greet at the show that “the media twisted my words, I think Tupac is a legend.” Even after this, several Tupac fans have approached Leanos in public, demanding he explains why he called Tupac boring.

On June 8, 2019, a man filed a report with the Los Angeles Police Department after Lil Xan allegedly pulled a gun out on him. TMZ obtained the video where a man approached Lil Xan and asked him why he dissed Tupac in the 2018 interview and called him a name.

Lil Xan then appears to pull out a gun and wave it at the man and told him to leave and also called him the “n-word.” He then got into the passenger side of his Mercedes-Benz SUV, where he bragged to the man about his car and pulled the gun out again.
