How did ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington meet?

“Reese and I met at a work-shopping reading of a script at Leonardo DiCaprio’s house,” Washington told Entertainment Tonight. “Neither of us got the part.”

The pair also both auditioned for Clueless, but neither got that part, either. The pair teamed together for the Time’s Up Initiative in 2017. Together they promoted workplace equality along with various other female celebrities. They got to know each other through their dedication to the movement.

“I got to know Kerry, and our relationship has grown and become richer and deeper through Time’s Up,” Witherspoon added. “We really share ideas about how we want to see safety in the workplace.

Then Witherspoon emailed Washington when she found the novel Little Fires Everywhere

“It was really so exciting to get that email from Reese that she had found something she thought might be right for us,” Washington continued.

Are Witherspoon and Washington friends in real life?

Throughout the interview, viewers get the feeling that Witherspoon and Washington are very close.

“And also being in each other’s tribe and sharing what it is like to start a production company,” Washington adds to Witherspoon’s comment about getting to know each other. “[We share] what it’s like to be a working mom, and what it’s like to balance your marriage while you are a working actor.”

Washington explains all of the things that the two talk about now that they are part of the same tribe.

“It’s really cool for me to see you step into a leadership position that you really deserve and that you really feel excited about it,” Witherspoon tells Washington about her role as producer for Little Fires Everywhere.

“She’s an amazing partner,” adds Washington.

Witherspoon and Washington look like they are very close friends

From all of the interviews of the pair together, we conclude that the two are pretty close. Witherspoon specifically reached out to Washington to work on this miniseries together, and Washington was very excited to hear from her.

“I love chatting with you,” Witherspoon wrote on one of Washington’s Instagram posts. “You always have the best questions.”

The duo often interview together and are pictured with arms around one another at events. While they do not come out and say that they are “besties,” we think talking about being in the same “tribe” together is close enough.

Seven of the eight episodes of Little Fires Everywhere are currently available for streaming on Hulu. The finale episode will drop to the streaming giant on April 22, 2020.
