Timothée Chalamet plays Laurie in this adaptation of ‘Little Women’

He may be best known for his roles in Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird. Since his acting debut, Timothée Chalamet appeared in a handful of films, including The King, Miss Stevens, and Beautiful Boy. Now, he’s to play one of the lead characters in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women — Laurie.

What makes his character and Saoirse Ronan’s character unique, director Greta Gerwig explained, is their gender expression and their relationship to each other. Choosing Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan to portray Laurie and Jo, two actors who previously played each others’ love interested during Lady Bird, was an intentional choice.

“Jo is a girl with a boy’s name, Laurie is a boy with a girl’s name,” Greta Gerwig said during an interview with Vanity Fair. “In some ways, they are each other’s twins.”

“They find each other before they’ve committed to a gender,” Gerwig continues. “It wouldn’t be wrong to call Saoirse handsome and Timothée beautiful. Both have a slightly androgynous quality that makes them perfect for these characters.”

Even before the premiere of ‘Little Women,’ some fans shared their love for Timothée Chalamet on social media

Once the trailer for Little Women premiered on YouTube, some viewers shared their love for the cast on social media. Of course, one of the actors getting the most attention is Timothée Chalamet. One Twitter user said, “Timothée dressed as Laurie, I’m- yeah… no, I’m definitely not going to stop talking about this for the rest of my life.”

“Just only now thinking of the proposal rejection scene we’re gonna get between these two. The kiss and then the decline of Laurie’s proposal. Timothée Chalamet being sad means I’m gonna be sad. Crying hours: open,” wrote another Twitter User.
