There’s a magical key for everything. At least, that’s the case in Netflix‘s Locke & Key fantasy series, based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s comic book series of the same name. The show follows the Locke family on their move to the fictional Matheson, Massachusetts.

The Lockes are looking for a fresh start after the death of husband and father Rendell Locke (played by Bill Heck). However, the kids discover a sinister, mythical mystery in Rendell’s family home, the Keyhouse. As it turns out, the home got that name because it’s filled with hidden keys that unlock magical abilities. Here’s how many keys there are in Locke & Key across the Netflix series and the comics.

Netflix’s ‘Locke & Key’ has shown 12 keys so far

Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott) discover various keys during season 1. Each key gives a certain power to the person using it. For example, the Head Key allows a person to literally unlock and step into their own mind, while the Matchstick Key sets things — and people — on fire.

The keys are mostly in the hands of the Locke kids, as adults can’t remember the keys exist. However, some of Rendell’s old friends have kept keys into adulthood, as they once gave themselves the ability to remember. Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira), a demon who takes on the form of a woman, also steals a few keys.

In total, season 1 introduces 12 keys. As Insider noted, Kinsey has the Head Key, Matchstick Key, Ghost Key, and Omega Key. Meanwhile, Tyler or Bode might have the Mending Key. Unfortunately, Dodge has probably gotten her hands on most of the keys, as she stole some from Rendell’s friend Ellie (Sherri Saum). Dodge has the Shadow Key, Mirror Key, Anywhere Key, Plant Key, Identity Key, and Music Box Key.

Finally, season 1 shows the Echo Key, which Ellie uses to summon the voice of her late boyfriend, Lucas (Felix Mallard). However, it’s unclear if she still has the key.

The ‘Locke & Key’ comic books feature a total of nearly 40 keys

Those initial keys might seem like a lot, but it’s nothing compared to how many keys are featured in the Locke & Key comics. In total, there are just under 40 keys in the series. However, some keys, like the Mirror Key and the Matchstick Key, only came to the comics after the Netflix series introduced them.

The Identity Key is strictly shown in the Netflix version, not the comics. Meanwhile, the Netflix show’s Plant Key is actually the Thorn Key in the comics.

There’s plenty of interesting keys fans can only hope to see in Netflix’s Locke & Key, like the eerie Key to Hell or the Key to the Moon. Season 1 does mention the Animal Key and Timeshift Key, but those have yet to be discovered, so it seems likely they would appear in the future.

More might be found in season 2, arriving in October

Thankfully, there’s plenty of time for the Lockes to find the rest of the keys. Locke & Key Season 2 will premiere sometime in October, and a third season has already been confirmed. Darby Stanchfield, who plays mother Nina Locke, confirmed on Instagram in August that season 3 had wrapped filming.
