‘Love Is Blind’: Carlton Says the Producers Didn’t Pressure Him to Tell His Story at All
Carlton Morton starred in the first season of Netflix’s Love Is Blind. He found love with Diamond Jack, but the two parted ways after getting into a heated argument in Mexico.
Carlton had been nervous about telling Diamond that he’s sexually fluid. When he told her in Mexico, she told him she needed time to process the information and things turned ugly.
After that episode aired, Carlton received a lot of backlash from fans who felt he could have handled the situation better. The backlash negatively affected the reality star’s mental health, but he’s working on himself and his happiness in therapy, he says.
“A lot of backlash from the show. People apparently think that I’m like a horrible person who hates women and that’s just not the case. So I’ve just been trying to do everything I can to protect my mental health at this point,” he said on a recent episode of “Love In Sight.”
What Carlton would do differently filming ‘Love Is Blind’
The podcast host asked Carlton if, looking back, he would have done anything differently.
“I think I would have not reacted. There was definitely an emission of certain slurs and different things that were thrown at me that moment. I would have reacted different to those things, those triggers. I would not have shut down so easily. And, to be honest, I probably would have gone with my other choice for proposal person,” he said.
Carlton connected with another woman in the pods named Briana Holmes (the woman who said she hates hearing people breathe).
The host also asked Carlton why he chose to disclose his sexuality on camera.
“The way a reality show is formatted, I had no choice but to tell the cameras. If I was opening up that day in confessionals about interviews specifically about my life, then I had to tell that story,” he said.
“Right now it’s so easy to point the finger,” Carlton continued, adding that most people don’t know how reality TV really works.
Carlton says the ‘Love Is Blind’ producers ‘were actually very amazing’
Carlton says he spoke about his sexuality because he wanted to, and felt like it was something he needed to share with his future partner. The Love Is Blind producers never pressured him to say anything he didn’t want to say.
“It was definitely something that was not producer pitched, as a lot of people say. Like, ‘Did the producers ask you?’ No, the producers were actually very amazing. They did an amazing job at facilitating how my story rolled out as it related to me being comfortable to even roll it out myself,” he said.
Carlton continued: “I was reassured several times that even if I didn’t want to say anything, I don’t have to. I don’t feel like anyone else was forced. And I definitely didn’t feel forced or the need to just shout it to the top of the mountain.”
It’s not uncommon for reality stars to exit a show feeling manipulated by producers. It’s nice to know Carlton didn’t have that experience on Love Is Blind.
