Giannina Gibelli met Damian Powers on the first season of Netflix’s Love Is Blind. They got engaged without ever seeing each other, and had one of the rockier relationships leading to their fatefully dramatic wedding day. Today, however, they’re happily together and taking their time as a couple.

How Giannina ended up on ‘Love Is Blind’

When Giannina got approached to audition for Love Is Blind, she’d just given up on all the men in Atlanta.

“I was actually at a bar with a couple of my girlfriends and I was telling them how there was just no men for me in this city. And at that moment, my phone blinked and it was this DM saying, ‘Hi, I’m casting for this experience.’ I’d never gotten a casting call. I’d always gotten little collaborations. Picked up the phone, gave her a call, she told me: ‘So you can fall in love with someone without seeing them and if you do you get engaged and there’s a wedding,'” the reality star said on the “Love In Sight” podcast.

Giannina told the casting person that her timing “couldn’t have been more perfect because I’d just given up all hope.”

She thought: “This sounds a little weird, but I’m a little weird. So maybe this can happen.”

The reality star said she’d always dated based on personality over looks anyway. So she felt like she could be a good fit for the show.

“I’d already started falling for guys, pretty much my whole roster, just based on their personalities. If you look at their faces I have no type. So I was like, ‘OK, this could actually work for me.’ I’m a very cosmic person. I would yell into the universe: ‘I want to find the love of my life!’ And then this came and I was like, ‘OK, sure. I’m down for it.’ I didn’t think I was ever gonna get picked. I was just more curious about the process. And lo and behold…” she said.

Giannina worried about getting along with the other women

But when she was cast, Giannina said she was worried about getting along with the other women.

“I’m more of like a guy’s girl. So I didn’t know that I was gonna get along with all these really beautiful women. We’re all kind of dating the same guys,” she explained.

But, pretty early on, the reality star said a “sisterhood” formed between her and the other contestants.

“It ended up being such a great sisterhood, and every single girl in there, we bonded together,” she said.

In fact, Giannina says she’s who contestants went to for advice.

“I was kind of that girl that everyone went to for advice. I’ve always been that person. So I just kind of calmed everyone down or told them, ‘Hey, it’s OK if he’s a little confused right now, but show him what ya got!'”
