Why Netflix’s ‘Love Is Blind’ Was Only Shot in Atlanta
Netflix’s first real dating show, Love Is Blind exploded across the internet when it premiered in February 2020. Now, several weeks later and with the finale and reunion special out in the open, people still can’t stop talking about the series.
The show is a revolutionary experiment that thrusts fifteen women and fifteen men in various pods. They connected and dated one another without any real-world distractions or any physical interaction. You read that correctly. Love Is Blind is much more than blind dating, it’s litterally dating someone that you’ve never seen before. In fact, you don’t actually get to meet your new fiancé until after a marriage proposal has been offered and accepted. “It was about 15-16 days that we didn’t talk to anybody in the outside world,” Mark Cuevas described the experience on 11Alive. “So what was cool about that was we literally had to go into ourselves [and ask] what do I want, what’s important to me?”
The series was shot over the course of two months back in the fall of 2018. However, what people noticed was that Love Is Blind was only shot in Atlanta, Georgia. Here’s why.
The ‘Love Is Blind’ contestants did not live in luxury
Though Season 1 of Love Is Blind was filmed entirely in Atlanta except for their trip to Mexico, the contestants weren’t exactly living a life of luxury. “We slept in trailers and they were correctional facility beds,” Kenny told Refinery29. “The design was to just strip us down from our comfort level.”
Luckily it was only two weeks of filming because that seems like a lot.
The resort from ‘Love Is Blind’ was located in Playa Del Carmen
The only time the contestants left Atlanta was when the six-engaged couples left the pods and flew to Playa Del Carmen near Cancun, Mexico. The lush resort where they tried to make their emotional connections match their physical was the Grand Velas.
Though many couples were able to connect on a physical level. It was clear that some couples weren’t going to make it to the finish line almost as soon as they touched down in Mexico.
This is why ‘Love Is Blind’ was only shot in Atlanta
The pods and the subsequent apartment buildings where the engaged couples lived until their weddings were all located in Atlanta. Though Georgia is known for its booming film and TV industry, which made it easy for the series to build the pods and the living quarters for the contestants, that’s not the only reason why this location was chosen.
All of the contestants including now-married couples, Lauren Speed-Hamilton, Cameron Hamilton, Amber Pike, and Matt Barnett were currently living in Atlanta. Unlike BachelorNation — Love is Blind wanted to make sure their newlyweds had an as easy a time as possible committing. Therefore having the duo already located in the same place was a major plus. Show creator Chris Coelen explained to Entertainment Tonight, “The reason that we did that was because we wanted to give these people a real shot at making their relationships work for the long term,”
If the show gets renewed for a second season (and we think it will), we’re going to guess that they might switch up the city. The rumor is that Coelen has his eye on New York, Boston, and Houston.
