Can someone be lord over Heaven and Hell? That’s one of the final questions for Tom Ellis’ Lucifer Morningstar as the series closes its last chapter. While Lucifer will continue to live on Netflix — and in the celestial realms — Ellis is primed for his next adventure. Fortunately, much of his fan base can travel with him too when he hits the screen in a romantic comedy flick.

Tom Ellis will star in ‘Players’ film on Netflix

Sorry, Deckerstar fans, your favorite devil is transitioning into a new character for a different Netflix production. Ellis stars opposite Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez in the upcoming rom-com, Players, and will play her love interest.

According to Netflix’s logline, the story follows Rodriguez’s Mack, a player who may need to change her ways.

New York City sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew, but when she unexpectedly falls head-over-heels for one of her targets (Tom Ellis), they all must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps.

Ellis has been sharing updates on his Instagram page, and fans noted that he traveled to New York in July for filming. Word on the street is the movie wraps production in September. He recently posted a behind-the-scenes snap of him and Rodriguez together on site. She shared a similar photo and captioned with “Jane and Lucifer.”

Liza Koshy, Augustus Prew, and Joel Courtney joined the cast in June, so fans will see some other familiar faces when the film debuts.

Fans are excited to see Ellis in a movie role

Though Ellis has been charming audiences for years as a stage actor and TV lead, it’s been a minute since he’s hit the screen in a film. When he first announced his role in Players on social media back in March, his fans were happy that he landed a project after Lucifer.

Many expressed their intent to watch the new movie just because he’s in it and can’t wait to see him go full-on for this particular genre. Jane the Virgin fans love the idea of a character crossover. His Instagram post has comments such as, “Wtf lucifer with Jane the virgin????”

But Ellis fans — many of which are Lucifans — are willing to check out whatever he’s in next. That is the power of the devil.

In the meantime, catch Ellis in ‘Lucifer’

Ellis has two other feature rom-coms in his acting credits: Isn’t It Romantic and Miss Conception. But outside of Miranda, his most famous role is Lucifer. For six seasons, fans have watched his character on his own journey with love — love for himself and love for Chloe Decker.

The series concludes its run on Netflix on Sept. 10, wrapping up the beloved fallen angel’s on-screen story in a way that ties up loose ends and leaves room for one’s imagination. Before Ellis falls in love with Rodriguez’s character, he must finish telling Lucifer’s epic love story with Chloe. Fortunately, both projects will remain on Netflix.
