Maggie Rogers is known for her unique cross between folk and indie-pop music. That sound is reflected in Rogers’ outfits on stage, which transformed from jumpsuits and flowy outfits to tank tops and short hair for her Surrender era.

When performing in conjunction with Heard It In a Past Life, Rogers took an intentional step away from wearing “costumes” on stage.

Some know this artist from her viral video with Pharrell. Rogers has come a long way since studying Music and English at New York University, earning a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

The folk-pop artist rose in popularity with her album Heard It In a Past Life, complete with songs “Alaska,” “Say It,” and “Light On.” In 2019, she also released the single “Love You For a Long Time.” When she first started her music career, though, Rogers dressed in what she considered stage “costumes.”

As a folk artist with several live performances, Rogers first took to the stage with jumpsuits and flowy outfits. During an interview with Vulture, the performer discussed her stage “costumes” and how they evolved as her music did.

“I was scared,” Rogers said. “The jumpsuits were a way for me to put a costume on and have it be bigger than me. I was worried I wasn’t gonna be enough. Now I’m stoked to not be wearing a costume.”

“When I first made the EP, I thought I had to dance around to hold everyone’s attention,” she continued. “It was the first time I wasn’t playing a guitar. Now I’m learning to just feel. I’m learning the power of standing still and really singing.”

With Rogers entering a new era with Surrender, this artist is again changing up her persona and aesthetic, complete with a new haircut and even more carefree outfits at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Maggie Rogers released ‘That’s Where I Am’ in 2022

With Heard It In a Past Life debuting several years ago, Rogers announced another original album would premiere in 2022. That’s Surrender, which features her already released single, “That’s Where I Am.”

“‘That’s Where I Am’ is a story I’d been carrying around for many years, the story of a love that had been with me and unfolding for a long time,’ she said, according to NME. “A lot of the events that ‘Surrender’ chronicles take place in New York City.”

“In the stark solitude and distance of COVID, it was the backdrop for all my claustrophobic fantasies,” she added. “The proximity and pleasure of just staring at strangers. The way a night could unfold. Events that interrupt your day instead of having to consciously and deliberately make each decision.”

Surrender debuts on July 29. Until then, music by Rogers is available on most major streaming platforms.
