‘Malcolm & Marie’: Zendaya’s Film Is Entering Into the Oscar Race; When Does It Release on Netflix?
Zendaya fans rejoice. Netflix has updated the release date for Malcolm & Marie in order to launch an Oscar campaign for the film. Fans will note that Zendaya recently made history when she took home an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue Bennett on Euphoria. The 24-year-old became the youngest person to ever win in that category as well as the second Black woman to win in the category, following in Viola Davis’ footsteps.
And it seems that Netflix will be championing for Zendaya to get another huge award. Malcolm & Marie‘s new release date means that the film has become eligible for this award season. No doubt, Netflix will be campaigning for the Disney alum to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But what is the new film even about?
Zendaya’s new film has officially entered the Oscar race, what is it about?
Malcolm & Marie follows a director and his girlfriend following the premiere of his latest project. The story unfolds over the course of one evening and viewers are able to get an intimate glimpse into the couple’s relationship as they await critical reaction to the director’s latest film. Also starring John David Washington, the movie was one of the first films shot in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and was written for Zendaya.
So how did Malcolm & Marie come to be? Because of the pandemic, production for Season 2 of Euphoria had to be shut down. Still, Zendaya remained in close contact with Sam Levinson, who created and wrote the show. The pair spoke on a near-daily basis and when the Spider-Man: Far From Home star confessed that she missed acting, Levinson wrote Malcolm & Marie for her.
The Emmy winner gets candid about shooting the movie
“So we got this idea that we could do a movie in quarantine safely with a very small number of people,” Zendaya shared about how Malcolm & Marie was shot in an interview with Elle. “We used some crew members from Euphoria who obviously didn’t have a job because filming had stopped. I was fascinated with this idea of shooting a film with just two characters. It was like a play. It was challenging for all of us, because it was shot in just one space. Being quarantined together was great in some ways, because it allowed us to workshop and really dig into the material while we were there.”
Netflix releases the trailer for ‘Malcolm & Marie’ and announces the release date
After it was shot, Malcolm & Marie garnered a major bidding war between some major streaming platforms. Ultimately, it was Netflix who won out and acquired the film for a whopping $30 million. On January 8, 2021, Netflix released the trailer for the film and also shared that the film will be available for exclusive streaming on its platform on February 5, 2021. It will be interesting to see how fans and critics alike react to Zendaya’s newest venture. Only time will tell if Netflix’s Oscar campaign for the film will prove to be successful. But, either way, Malcolm & Marie has captured our attention.
