Zendaya fans rejoice. Netflix has updated the release date for Malcolm & Marie in order to launch an Oscar campaign for the film. Fans will note that Zendaya recently made history when she took home an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue Bennett on Euphoria. Zendaya’s new film has officially entered the Oscar race, what is it about?

Malcolm & Marie follows a director and his girlfriend following the premiere of his latest project. The story unfolds over the course of one evening and viewers are able to get an intimate glimpse into the couple’s relationship as they await critical reaction to the director’s latest film. Also starring John David Washington, the movie was one of the first films shot in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and was written for Zendaya.

So how did Malcolm & Marie come to be? Because of the pandemic, production for Season 2 of Euphoria had to be shut down. Still, Zendaya remained in close contact with Sam Levinson, who created and wrote the show. The pair spoke on a near-daily basis and when the Spider-Man: Far From Home star confessed that she missed acting, Levinson wrote Malcolm & Marie for her.

The Emmy winner gets candid about shooting the movie

“So we got this idea that we could do a movie in quarantine safely with a very small number of people,” Zendaya shared about how Malcolm & Marie was shot in an interview with Elle. “We used some crew members from Euphoria who obviously didn’t have a job because filming had stopped. I was fascinated with this idea of shooting a film with just two characters. It was like a play. It was challenging for all of us, because it was shot in just one space. Being quarantined together was great in some ways, because it allowed us to workshop and really dig into the material while we were there.”
