If you’re looking to start a new show, look no further than Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+, where the entire first season of The Mandalorian is available for binge-watching. What makes this Star Wars show so popular? Is it the most-watched series on Disney’s subscription service? Here’s what we know about The Mandalorian.

The Disney+ series, ‘The Mandalorian’ premiered during 2019

It’s the first-ever Star Wars live-action series. It was created, in part, by Marvel’s Jon Favreau and stars Pedro Pascal. There’s also the Child, an adorable character nicknamed Baby Yoda by fans on the internet. There’s a lot of aspects to consider when it comes to The Mandalorian’s success.

“Part of what’s fun about this and this new service, everybody, wherever they are, if they have this new service, they’re seeing it first,” director Jon Favreau said, according to Collider. “It’s nice to have people be able to experience something, at the same time, which is what I really loved about watching Game of Thrones. There’s that sense of, ‘What’s gonna happen this week?’”

In terms of critic and fan reviews, The Mandalorian still comes out on top. Currently, the television show has over a 90% audience score from Rotton Tomatoes. That far surpasses the audience score of other Disney+ original shows including High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (79%,) Diary of a Future President (83%,) and The World According to Jeff Goldblum (78%.)

Is ‘The Mandalorian’ the most popular show on Disney+?

One November 2019 report from Parrot Analytics stated that The Mandalorian had the highest overall “audience TV demand in the United States.” On streaming platforms, it surpassed shows  Stranger Things and The Crown, while overall it surpassed award-winning shows like Saturday Night Live and Spongebob Squarepants.

“While demand is a metric that should not be confused with subscriber numbers, this is a strong indication that the Star Wars series is driving a lot of sign-ups to the fledgling Disney+ service,” a statement from Parrot Analytics said.

According to Screenrant, The Mandalorian actually peaked in popularity 50 days into its debut, shortly after its season 1 finale premiered on Disney+. The article continues, stating, “it was 7.3 percent higher than peak demand for The Witcher, which was dropped as an entire season, and peaked just 6 days after it became available on Netflix.”

According to an email sent to Disney+ users, The Mandalorian is one of the most popular shows on the streaming platform, surpassing the popularity of Disney Channel originals like The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Phineas and Ferb

The Star Wars original has even been renewed for its second season, which, reportedly, will premiere sometime during Fall 2020. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may have impacted its release timeline.
