Manifest returned Monday for its second season on NBC. While there are still a lot of unanswered questions left about the flight and its aftermath, it doesn’t look like the show plans to give us answers anytime soon.

Fans on social media have also been critical of one pairing on the show in particular between a lead character and a relative newcomer.

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from the Jan. 6, 2020 episode of Manifest.

‘Manifest’ is pushing a particular couple and pulling apart another

In the new episode, we saw the aftermath of the shooting cliffhanger of the season 1 finale. As Jared (J.R. Ramirez) tried to pull the gun from Zeke (Matt Long), a shot was fired and hit Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh). She is taken to the hospital and fully recovers. She told Zeke to run away and not get caught, but Jared, determined to get one up on him, ensures that a search is held. Cal (Jack Messina) gets a vision and finds out that Zeke is at his mother’s house. He keeps telling Zeke that he has to stay and that he and Michaela are supposed to be together.

Cal ends up convincing Zeke to stay — but not in the way he thought. Zeke turns himself in, much to Michaela’s chagrin. They share a close moment before he is taken away. Jared is happy about this and believes he was protecting Michaela. She disagrees and is basically further from Jared than ever before.

Previews of the upcoming episodes show that Zeke and Michaela are going to become even closer. Scenes in a promo show the two kissing and sleeping together. Though these may be visions, it seems like this relationship pairing between Michaela and Zeke is one that the show will be pushing this season and Jared and Michaela will not be together, despite going through so much last season.

Fans don’t like this move for the characters

Many Manifest fans don’t really think that Michaela and Zeke should be together. Even fans who are ambivalent about the pairing seem to agree about the fact that it seems to be too much too soon.

“I’m confused. Why are we suddenly acting like Zeke and Michaela is some kind of epic love when all last season was about her epic Iove with Jared?” said one person.

Another fan added, “I can’t stop laughing. They really trying to have Michaela all in love with Zeke as if he didn’t just get into her life and she didn’t have this epic love with Jared all last season.”

One person was fed up with the Zeke and Michaela story, saying, “No Michaela, your weird focus on Zeke & how you brought him into your family’s life with no little to know [sic] thought is what got you shot! All Jared has ever done is try to help you!”

Manifest airs Mondays on NBC.
