It’s no secret that Mariah Carey loves Christmas. Every year around the holidays, her classic song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” climbs the sales and streams charts. First released in 1994, the song has stood the test of time to become a staple of holiday music.

‘All I Went For Christmas Is You’ went number 1 thanks to Mariah Carey’s fans

2019 marked 25 years since the release of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” The anniversary was made even more special by the fact that the song rose to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — something unprecedented for a song nearly three decades after its release.

Carey discussed what it was like having her beloved hit go number 1 on the chart in an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell on her web series No Filter with Naomi.

“I was in Aspen and I was there in the house,” Carey remembered. Even though the song has gone number 1 many times on the holiday song charts, it never made it to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Carey admitted that that never bothered her that much, but her fans were dedicated to putting “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in the number 1 spot that it deserved.

“The Lambs, my fans, the greatest people on earth, were so diligent about really making sure, ‘Hey, we’re going to have this number 1,'” Carey said. “In the midst of all the young new hot artists and their hits that were happening at that moment, it broke through it. And that’s the power of the song.”

Mariah Carey felt ‘at peace’ with her latest number 1 hit

After the song became her nineteenth number 1 hit, Carey left New York City for her wintertime retreat in Aspen with her closest family and friends. In early January 2020, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” made Carey the first artist to chart a number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in four different decades.

She told Campbell about after she learned that she had achieved the feat, and credits her fans for making it happen.

“I sat down, I was looking at the Christmas tree, and I felt at peace. I was like, ‘This is an incredible moment. This is an incredible moment,'” she smiled. “They made me that happy.”

Carey’s number 1 for ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ made her feel ‘complete’

In her tell-all memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey released in September 2020, Carey gave fans a look into what that moment was like for her personally.

“The kids were snuggled up in the family room, watching a movie, and everyone else was content in their bedrooms,” Carey recounted. “I tiptoed quietly into the living room and sat by the fireplace. All was dark except for stars twinkling outside of the big windows against the black-blue sky and the amber glow from the fire.”

Everything was perfectly still, and Carey knew that she was exactly where she was supposed to be. “I reveled in a sweet, quiet, private moment with myself. I took it all in,” she reflected. “I am peaceful. I am complete.”
