Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann have a beautiful and long-lasting love together. They met on the set of Law & Order: SVU in 2002, and the couple eventually tied the knot in 2004. They now have three children together – August, Amaya, and Andrew.

Hermann played Attorney Trevor Langan on the hit series, and that’s where he met his future wife. Hargitay spoke with People and revealed that their first date was attending a church service together. Hargitay recalls “sobbing” when she realized he was “the one.”

“We went to church together, and it was like getting hit with a lightning bolt,” Hargitay recalls. “I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.”

In 2019, Hermann spoke with Page Six and revealed a very “New York moment.” He recalls a date with Mariska before they were married. At the time, Hargitay had just moved to a nice apartment in Tribeca. Finally, Hermann “got up the courage” to take her to his “tiny” apartment, but something prevented that from happening.

“Mariska just got picked up for season 20. We started dating in season 2,” Hermann reveals. “So, 100,000 years ago. And I finally, when we started dating, I finally got up the courage to show her my apartment. She had just moved to this beautiful apartment in Tribeca. My apartment was tiny, tiny on 36th street. And it’s amazing, it was the block between the Lincoln Tunnel and 10th Avenue.”

On their way to see Hermann’s place, they noticed something unsettling, and they heard a sound “like fingernails on glass.” It turns out a large number of rats were on the move, and it sounds like a shocking experience for the couple.

“One night, we were walking down 36th street to my apartment, because I wanted to show it to her,” Hermann continues. “All of a sudden there was this sound, and it sounded like fingernails on glass. And then we looked down, and all of a sudden, the street was moving. And it was a herd of rats. Hundreds, and I mean hundreds of rats were pouring out of this parking lot waving across the street.”

Hermann’s response to the moment was truly priceless. “The only thing that I could say to this woman I loved and whom I would eventually marry was, ‘New York!’” Hermann recalls. He says Hargitay’s response was, ‘What is your problem?’ He says she was “terrified.”

The rodents put a wrench in Hermann’s plans to show Hargitay his apartment, at least that night, so the rats apparently wrecked the evening. “Needless to say, that night, I did not show her my apartment,” Hermann continues. “It was another night, but New York it’s a… beautiful… town. That was my New York moment.”

It sounds like an interesting story to tell their children one day, as it’s truly a unique moment they share as a couple.
