Hargitay and Hermann have three children together. According to Us Magazine, they welcomed a son together, named August, in 2006. Then, the couple adopted two children in 2011, Amaya and Andrew.

In an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan back in 2019, Hargitay revealed that she does the most adorable thing with her family for Halloween every year.

“Well, we’re big on Halloween,” Hargitay revealed. “Oh yeah. We’re hardcore.”

“Do you do family costumes?” Kelly Ripa asked.

“Oh yes,” Hargitay said. She even shows off some pictures of her and the family dressed up for Halloween in previous years. One year, they all dressed up as Marvel characters. It seems like dressing up together in coordinated costumes as a family for the holiday has become a sweet tradition they share, although 2019 was a little different.

Hargitay’s son didn’t want to participate in the group-themed costumes in 2019

However, Hargitay’s son, August, said he wouldn’t participate in 2019. “So this year, the littles, we call them the littles, decided that they wanted to be The Descendants. Of course, I hadn’t seen this movie and didn’t know what it was, and I was like, ‘You guys pick it. I’m in.’ And August was like, ‘No.’ So he won’t be partaking this year.”

She mentions the theme may be “a little young for him.” He was 13 at the time, so it makes sense.

On Late Night with Seth Meyers that same year, Hargitay said she thought August would go as a “cool pirate.” He did go out and spend the night with his family, as is evident by the post that Hargitay shared of them on Instagram all dressed up.

Hargitay talks about adoption

In 2012, Hargitay went on The Ellen Show, and she spoke about adopting. Hargitay and her husband had previously spoken about adopting again after the first time with Amaya, but the initial plan was to wait a year or a year and a half. But they received a call that changed those plans.

“Well it’s pretty dreamy,” Hargitay says. “Some days I just sit and pinch myself because you know when we adopted our daughter, our beloved daughter, who thrills me and rocks my world. And you know, you have one kid and then you think, ‘Oh my gosh I’ll never love another kid.’ And the second one comes, and you can’t believe that you love them. And then the third one fell out of the sky.”

Hargitay’s lawyer actually called her about her son, Andrew, who was just a baby at the time. She got her son two days later, which is very quick for the process to hear Hargitay tell it.

“But then we got a call out of nowhere from our lawyer,” Hargitay continued. “Who said, ‘You know, we have this amazing little boy, this amazing opportunity. And it just, it was one of those things that we were not expecting at all. And my husband and I looked at each other and have never been more sure about anything and knew it was just right.”

It’s safe to say that Mariska Hargitay is a fantastic mom that really dotes on her children.
