Despite being one of the most popular and longest-running characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) has waited a long time to receive her own feature film.

The international superspy is one of the original Avengers along with Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Tony Stark/Iron (Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

After many years and many battles, the character is getting her own film titled Black Widow. The film was set to premiere in April 2020, but has been delayed, which has resulted in a key detail of Black Widow being revealed and is now known to the public.

Black Widow will provide a backstory for the mysterious titular character, focusing on her time and family in Russia. The movie’s villain is the masked Taskmaster, whose power is the ability to mimic fighting style.

Black Widow will also feature Florence Pugh as Natasha’s sister, and David Harbour as the sibling’s father and Russian superhero Red Guardian. The film may be the final appearance for Johansson in the MCU. Black Widow is as of now scheduled to hit theaters on November 6, 2020.

The film will be the beginning of Phase Four of the MCU series, which will begin to shape the future of the MCU by introducing new characters and continuing the stories of the newest Avengers.

How the delayed film was spoiled before its release

Before the new and exciting stories of the MCU begin, the film series will say goodbye and celebrate one of the original Avengers, Black Widow. Since the film is a prequel, Johansson’s character will live, but the film is a sort of passing of the torch, and the recipient of said torch will be Black Widow’s sister.

It is basically been confirmed that Pugh’s character will take over the mantle as Black Widow, and likely appear in future Marvel films.

The film’s director Cate Shortland said when speaking to Empire, that “[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction… “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

This transition has become widely known, partially because of the film’s extended delay due to COVID-19 precautions, and partially because of the intense media focus surrounding the film. The now well-known spoiler has caused a division between fans, some of which are glad to know the spoiler, and others that are upset by it.

In a time when information about a television show or movie can be shared instantly and passed around the internet, it is almost impossible to avoid spoilers. This is especially true for high-profile films like the Star Wars or Marvel franchises.

While some fans on Reddit enjoy learning as much as they can about a film before it is released, others attempt to avoid spoilers for as long as possible. These fans are disappointed to know that the character of Black Widow will transition to Pugh, especially since the information was released so far ahead of the film’s release.

While these fans are not excited that the spoiler was released, they are excited to see Pugh in the role.

Johansson has been a stalwart in the MCU’s long history, but seeing Pugh in the role will offer a new and exciting character to the universe. Black Widow will be followed by Marvel’s The Eternals, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and sequels for beloved characters such as Ant-Man, Thor, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

There are also plans to begin to finally introduce the X-Men and The Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all of which makes for an exciting future for Marvel fans.
