When Pretty Little Liars ended, it answered a lot of viewer questions. However, it also opened up the greater PLL universe to even more possibilities. With many series, fans just have to imagine what happened to the characters after the finale. But because there’s a spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, we know a little about how things have worked out for our main characters, including Mary and Alex Drake.

Who is Mary Drake?

OK, bear with us, because rehashing this is going to get complicated. In Season 6, we’re introduced to Mary Drake, the identical twin sister of Jessica DiLaurentis (Alison’s mother). After Charlotte passed away, Ali began to have “visions” of her dead mother, which turned out to be Mary. Mary helps Elliott Rollins have Ali committed, and we discover this is all in order to avenge Charlotte, who is Mary’s biological child.

But soon it’s revealed that their lives are all even more entangled than they imagined. In Season 7, Mary starts to become an ally for the Liars, spending time with Spencer especially. After she saves her life, we learn that Mary Drake is also Spencer’s biological mother, and she was then adopted by her mother, Veronica Hastings, and her biological father, Peter Hastings, when Mary was in Radley Sanitarium.

Who is Alex Drake?

After Charlotte’s (Big “A”) death, the Liars were tortured by a new person, who signed their name “A.D.” They encountered a few others with these initials along the way to discovering the truth, including Alison DiLaurentis herself. But in the end, it turns out that it was someone they never even knew existed: Alex Drake.

Alex reveals herself in the series finale. She’s the identical twin sister of Spencer, whose existence the Hastings had no idea about. Alex was adopted by a British couple but ended up in foster care. After learning about the Liars, her twin sister, and the death of her other sister, Charlotte, she exacted her revenge on what she believes should have been her life.

Here’s where we last saw them

In the Pretty Little Liars series finale, Mona, whose allegiance often wavered, helps the Liars take down Alex. She had helped Alex as a member of the A-Team recently, but, ultimately, chooses to save her friends, having Mary and Alex “arrested.”

However, the audience soon learns that she had a different form of torture in mind. Mona is seen working a doll shop in France. She has built a “dollhouse” of sorts in the basement of the shop, and in it, we see Mary and Alex, seemingly forever trapped in Mona’s game.

What we learned from The Perfectionists

But Mona didn’t stay in Europe for very long. She came back to the U.S., but this time, she is a faculty member at Beacon Heights University in Oregon. So what happened to her prisoners?

In the Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists pilot, Mona says that she came back to the U.S. because “the reasons I was there…escaped me.” In other words, Mary and Alex Drake literally escaped from where she had them. In a later episode, this is officially confirmed, when she’s asked if she’s worried they’ll track her down. But we never got a straight answer to this question. It looks like we won’t know where they are until Mona tells us…
