When Mary-Kate Olsen and French financier, Olivier Sarkozy were first linked in 2012, eyebrows were certainly raised. Hollywood is no stranger to May/December romances, but with a 17-year age gap, these two certainly looked like an odd match. Still, they seemed committed to one another, eventually tying the knot in November 2015.

Since The Row CEO and her twin sister, Ashley Olsen are notoriously quiet about the private lives, many people assumed that their marriage was still going smoothly. Over the years, the pair had been spotted together at various events including several Knicks basketball games.

Unfortunately, it appears that this relationship was not meant to last. Olsen shocked the world in mid-May 2020 when she filed an emergency divorce petition from Sarkozy amid a global pandemic. Now, we know why.

Inside Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy’s marriage

Despite their massive age gap, Olsen and Sarkozy seemed like a good match for one another. The millionaires were both very business-oriented and after eight-years total together, they seemed to be in sync. Olsen even gave fans a brief glimpse into her relationship with her soon-to-be ex-husband back in 2017.

“I think we’re lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us,” she explained to Porter magazine. “We don’t need so much time to sit and think and ponder. But then I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner. I ride horses on the weekends. You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don’t have it, look for it. Or you get burned out and then you’re not productive.”

Mary-Kate Olsen’s divorce petition has shocked everyone

Therefore, when the Full House alum asked for an emergency divorce petition fans were left stunned. Initially the Elizabeth and James designer signed a petition for divorce on April 17. However, amid the coronavirus (COVID-19), New York State is not allowing any divorce petitions. This prompted the fashion icon to file an emergency petition. Olsen’s lawyers alleged that Sarkozy had ended the lease on the NYC-apartment he had previously shared with Olsen without her knowledge and that she was going to be forced out by May 18.

Fearful that this was an inadequate amount of time to collect her belongings and relocate, Olsen tried to protect her property and get an extension until May 30. Unfortunately, her request has been denied. The former actress will have to move her belongings or risk them being thrown out.

This is the real reason Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy are getting a divorce

Since the pair had previously been so private, it seems shocking that the divorce would become so heated and brutal so quickly. However, it appears that Sarkozy could not handle Olsen’s laser focus on her career.

“She’s super career-focused and he’s very French and wanted her to be more available,” Yahoo! Celebrity is reporting via People. “You can’t control a girl who has been on the billionaire track since her 20s.”

For now, Olsen is staying with her twin sister until her divorce can be legally started and finalized “It’s gotten very ugly between them,” an insider told E! News. “She’s done with constant drama.”
