The Matrix 4 is slated for a late 2021 release, and the recently dropped teaser trailer is a promise of good things to come. Fans of The Matrix franchise are well aware of how the 2003 Matrix sequels flopped compared to the original film. It, therefore, came as a surprise that there would be a fourth installment.

With The Matrix Resurrection, only one of the Wachowski siblings would be directing. Although various actors have agreed to reprise their characters, viewers would see some new faces. So here is the new cast of the Keanu Reeves franchise.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was the first actor to join The Matrix 4 cast in 2019 in a to-be-announced role. Mateen landed the part after the director spent several days looking for potential actors. The star is known for his impressive performance in Watchmen, The Greatest Showman, and The Get Down. Not much is known about his character in The Matrix 4, but rumors suggest that he could be playing a young Morpheus.

Laurence Fishburne is presently absent from the fourth installment, and it is speculated that Mateen would be taking on his role as a much younger version or his relative. The trailer also strongly asserts the theories about Mateen’s character as he is seen guiding Neo to the matrix.

Jessica Henwick

Henwick was cast in a quickfire round of casting announcements in 2019. The star rose to fame in Iron Fist playing Colleen Wing, so it might make sense to see her playing an action-centered role in The Matrix 4.

The casting announcement suggested that the Underwater star would have a lead role, with some theorizing that she would play a Neo-like character in The Matrix 4. Some speculate that Henwick’s character might have partnered with Mateen’s to lead The Matrix 4 in the absence of Reeve’s character Neo and Carrie Ann-Moss’ Trinity, who are still presumed dead.

Neil Patrick Harris

Harris has appeared in several hit series and movies, including how I met your mother playing Barney Stinson. He was the second actor to be added to The Matrix 4 cast. Harris’s role was kept under wraps, but the teaser trailer revealed that he would be playing Neo’s therapist within the simulation.

However, as Screen Rant reports, there might be more to his character than meets the eye. The publication theorizes that Harris’ character could be the villain of the movie using his role as a therapist to hide his control over Neo.

Chopra Jonas achieved fame with her role in Quantico. She is among the new intake of actors set to join The Matrix 4, with details of her role being kept quiet for now. Unlike actors like Harris and Mateen, Chopra Jonas’ role hasn’t been announced as a lead one.

Jonathan Groff

Frozen star Jonathan Groff joined The Matrix 4 cast in December 2019 in an unnamed role. His work in Mindhunter leads many to speculate that he might join The Matrix 4 in an agency capacity, possibly as a new version of Agent Smith.

Christina Ricci

Ricci was late to the party as her casting announcement was made in June 2021. The Addams Family star is also joining the cast in a mystery role.

Toby Onwumere

Onwumere and director Wachowski have worked before in Sense8. He joined The Matrix 4 in December 2019 in an unknown role, but speculations point towards a young Dozer in the movie.

Max Riemelt

The German-born actor is set to reteam up with Wachowski in an unidentified role in The Matrix 4.

Brian J. Smith

Wachowski has provided a reunion of sorts with some of the new The Matrix 4 cast additions as she has previously worked with Smith as well on Sense8. Smith’s role in The Matrix 4 is also unspecified.

Telma Hopkins

The Family Matters alum is rumored to be joining the cast as The Oracle.
