‘Mayans MC’: Emilio Rivera Claims ‘F**ked Up’ Season 3 Is Darker Than all 7 Seasons of ‘Sons of Anarchy’

‘Sons of Anarchy’ was known for its violence and dark storylines. Now, star of the spinoff ‘Mayans MC’ star Emilio Rivera claims that fans have not seen anything this dark — not even in all seven seasons of Kurt Sutter's original biker drama.

Season 3 of Mayans MC is almost here, and star Emilio Rivera promises that things are going to get dark. Fans can expect more pain and violence than they’ve ever seen before — even on Sons of Anarchy.

The result, according to Rivera, is the best season of Mayans MC yet.

‘Mayans MC’ season 3 will dive into characters’ backstories

One week ahead of the premiere, FX released an in-depth first look at season 3 of Mayans MC. The clip gave fans hints about what’s to come in the show’s “darkest” season. According to star JD Pardo (Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes), the “leashes come off.”

Clayton Cardenas (Angel Reyes) explains that fans wanted to know club members’ backstories. In season 3, they are “finally getting to see that.”

“That’s what makes our stories even better is when you get to explore these characters,” Rivera (Marcus Alvarez) says.

The pain from season 3 is ‘on a whole different level’

During an appearance on The Domenick Nati Show, Rivera went into more detail about the upcoming episodes. He explained that the pain is “on a whole different level.”

“As much as I like season 1 and season 2, we went to a different level,” Rivera says of season 3. “The hurt, the pain, is a whole different level. From the gate, you’re going to say ‘what the f*ck just happened.'”

During his interview, Rivera made it clear that the pain and violence will be front and center during the new season. Whether it’s “heartfelt or physically,” there’s going to be “a lot of pain” that the characters will endure. And, Rivera promises that it’s “more than you can imagine.”

The new season of ‘Mayans MC’ is the best one yet

Rivera also promised that season 3 will “hands down” be the best one yet. He says that new showrunner Elgin James put them all to the test to see where things could go. The actor admits it was challenging, but worth it.

Without series co-creator Kurt Sutter, Rivera says that the new season won’t necessarily be different from what fans have seen before. However, he did make it clear that season 3 is “deep.” Rivera admitted that he cried when he read the scripts for season 3 for the first time. He also got angry.

“It made me cry. It made me mad. It made me angry. It took me on a roller coaster ride just reading it,” Rivera recalled.

The new scripts allowed Emilio Rivera to revisit his past

Rivera says that he loves being an actor because it makes him “feel” in a safe way. He explained that he was able to revisit a time in his life, but then immediately snap out of it. Before, he was “really in there” and couldn’t get out.

“I was addicted to heroin and cocaine for 11 years,” Rivera revealed. “A little bit of all this season I’ve dealt with in real life. It’s heavy, man. And they hit it in right in the nail.”

This season of ‘Mayans MC’ will be darker than ‘Sons of Anarchy’

Rivera explained that James is also from “the life” and he writes from his own experiences. The writers that James hires know how to add to that story. Rivera says that this has made season 3 the darkest one so far.

“I think it’s going to be darker than the past two years plus the seven years of Sons of Anarchy,” Rivera promised. “It’s f*cked up.”

Season 3 of Mayans MC premieres March 16 on FX. All new episodes will be available on Hulu the day after they air.
