Edward James Olmos’ son directed ‘Mayans MC’ Season 4 Episode 4

Edward James Olmos’ son Michael directed Mayans MC Season 4 Episode 4, “A Crow Flew By.” Michael has other directing credits, such as the 2012 film Filly Brown and the 2019 film Windows on the World, both of which featured his father in acting roles.

Edward didn’t feature heavily in this episode, but his character did have a few important moments. In one scene Felipe receives a postcard from Gaby which reads, “I got the internship! Company isn’t as good as the camiceria but there’s less blood. I miss you.” Later, EZ rides by his father’s shop and notices that the windows are boarded up. He stops inside and finds Gaby’s postcard, but leaves before Felipe sees him.

Later in the episode, Angel arrives home to find that his father is paying him and Nails a visit. Nails also informs Angel that Felipe brought a cake. The father and son sit down to have a slice together. There’s little conversation, but Felipe looks around at the home and remarks, “This is good.”

Elgin James helped Michael D. Olmos prepare to direct the episode

This was the first time Michael directed an episode of Mayans MC. Edward James Olmos praised his son’s skills on the set of Mayans MC during a recent interview with Remezcla. “New directors want to move the line and want to get [the episode] to a place where people can say, ‘Wow, [the series] has grown so much since he or she came on as director,’” the actor said. “Most of the directors we get [on Mayans] are really good. That’s the key. That’s what Mikey did.”

As for Michael himself, he recalled showrunner Elgin James preparing him to direct the latest episode. “[Elgin] invited me to the set, too,” Michael also told Remezcla. “I hung out with him for about three weeks. I got a chance to talk about everything. This was the most prepared I could have been for anything.”

Edward James Olmos teases ‘intense’ season 4

So far in Mayans MC Season 4, EZ is not speaking to his father Felipe. He hasn’t gotten over the fact that Felipe told Gaby to leave town without EZ, and she ended up taking his advice. “If you’ve watched the first three seasons, you get to understand a little bit about the beauty of the family and the complexity of it,” Olmos said during a red carpet interview with LRM Online.

“But the fourth season completely implodes, so you have to get ready for it. Family is very important so you understand what an implosion means to this family and it’s intense.” Edward also spoke of his character in season 4 to Remezcla, saying, “karma is catching up to him in a bad way.”

“You take him at the beginning of the series as being a kind and gentle soul, and as time goes on…you start to find out about his past, and you start to realize he’s probably darker than his boys,” Edward said. “[Felipe] tries very hard to be a good person, but his past catches up to him, and it gets very difficult to handle.”

New episodes of Mayans MC Season 4 air Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
