For many movie fans, Oct. 3 is a pop culture holiday that commemorates Mean Girls. It’s the day where jokes fly about wearing pink on Wednesdays, Glen Coco, and making fetch happen. Lindsay Lohan’s Cady and Rachel McAdams’ Regina George were at the center of the plot, but the movie is filled with plenty of entertaining and zany characters.

That includes Regina’s mom, June George, played by Amy Poehler. She strutted around with her little Chihuahua in tow, but there’s one scene that made McAdams worry about Poehler and the dog’s appetite.

‘Mean Girls’ Chihuahua munched on Mrs. George’s breast

Cady’s first visit to Regina’s house with the other girls was another culture shock for her. Not only did she marvel at Regina’s master suite, but Regina’s mom’s personality and quirky ways astounded her. Gretchen whispered to her to check out Mrs. George’s fake breasts, and at first, she didn’t understand why.

Cady figured it out once the woman greeted her with a hug, and she received a weirder lesson when the Chihuahua kept biting June’s chest. After serving them mocktails, the “cool mom” sat down and chatted with the girls as the dog nibbled away on her boob. It’s equal parts disturbing and hilarious, but it was also intentional.

McAdams thought the dog would chew Poehler up

When the Mean Girls cast got together for a 10-year reunion in 2014, Tina Fey, Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and McAdams shared some behind-the-scenes details with Entertainment Weekly. Seyfried remarked that she loved the scene where the “little Chihuahua is biting the nipples off Amy Poehler.”

She described it as fun, and McAdams shared how the production team pulled off the dog’s boob bite on command. Credit goes to wieners and Poehler’s stoic dedication to keeping a straight face.

“They, like, pinned a piece of a cocktail wiener into her bra. I thought this dog was going to tear her apart,” she said. “It was very effective. She was such a pro through it. She’s trying to do her lines and being so professional, and this dog is chomping on her fake boob. I’ll never forget that.”

The studio didn’t want to hire Poehler for ‘Mean Girls’

Director Mark Waters spilled some Mean Girls secrets to Vulture during a 2014 interview, and he revealed they fought for Poehler to be in the film. Paramount Studios had misgivings about hiring Saturday Night Live actors.

Executives feared her casting — along with Tim Meadows — might overshadow the story and feel like a SNL project. Production won that battle, and according to Waters, it was Fey’s idea to bring Poehler aboard.

“When Tina said, ‘Amy would be really good for this if you’re interested,’ I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Let’s f*cking get Amy!’ From the moment I first saw Amy — I think it was an SNL sketch where she’s playing an amateur porn star on a date with Seann William Scott — I was in love with her,” said Waters.

Poehler turned June George into one of the most recognized movie moms in the world. Fans can re-watch the comedy with the hungry dog on Paramount+.
