In 1952, when she was just 25 years old, Queen Elizabeth II became the Queen of England. This was never supposed to be in the cards for the long-ruling monarch. She got her crown after he father,  King George VI, passed away, but he only became King after his elder brother King Edward VIII,  abdicated the crown in 1936.

Queen Elizabeth has ruled for nearly 70 years, and though she has had some rough patches, she has sought to make the crown more modern and hip with the times. She has been married to her husband Prince Philip since 1947, and they have four children together. Her eldest son, Prince Charles, will probably step in to become king in the coming years.

A gorgeous account of Queen Elizabeth’s early years can be seen on the hit Netflix series, The Crown.
