Meghan Markle spoke about financial difficulties in her childhood

Meghan Markle recently shared that she supports paid parental leave for all American parents. She wrote an open letter to Senator Chuck Schumer and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi on the site Paid Leave for All.

To drive home the importance of financial assistance for families, Meghan talked about financial difficulties in her childhood.

“I grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler—it may have cost less back then (to be honest, I can’t remember)—but what I do remember was the feeling: I knew how hard my parents worked to afford this because even at five bucks, eating out was something special, and I felt lucky,” she wrote.

Meghan also added that she started taking on odd jobs when she was 13 “to cover odds and ends.”

Meghan Markle’s past Instagram post allegedly debunks her claim of growing up poor

According to Daily Mail, in 2013, Meghan posted a photo that contradicted her story of financial difficulties. In the photo, the restaurant Musso and Frank Grill on Hollywood Boulevard could be seen. She wrote in the caption, “I used to have lunch with my dad here after every tap & ballet class. Happy. Thank you. More please #mussos #hollywood.”

The restaurant is rather popular and a favorite among many celebrities in Los Angeles, including Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt. Its current menu also includes items such as $55 Filet Mignon and $32 salmon fillet.

The news outlet noted that friends once shared Meghan took dance classes for “three to four years” when she was a teen in the 1990s.

“While [her father, Thomas Markle Sr.,] may not have paid that much for his lunch, but menus from the 1990s show a meal for two would cost up to $75 – 15 times more than the $5 Sizzler salad she said she lived on,” Daily Mail wrote.

Royal commentator Angela Mollard also recently accused Meghan of embellishing her story about her childhood.

“She then goes on to talk about the fact that when she was growing up she had to buy $5 salads to exist and she worked in a yoghurt shop and that sort of thing,” Mollard said, according to Express. “Making the point that she was sort of in poverty as well, now the critics have come out and said, well actually you went to a $16,000 a year school and your dad was a celebrated lighting director.”

Meghan attended Immaculate Heart High School, a private Catholic institution. Her father was also a lighting director on shows such as General Hospital and Married…with Children. When she was a child, he won a lottery worth $750,000.

Mollard added, “So, I think that is where she makes her errors. She has a point to say and then she seems to always need to embellish the story, and I think that’s where she’s gone wrong here.”
