Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have completely transformed their lives in the space of just a couple of months. The royal couple used to live their lives in the spotlight, at the beck and call of the British monarch and at the mercy of the press and public. However, in January 2020, the Sussexes decided enough was enough.

Since getting engaged to Prince Harry in November 2017 — the duchess has endured bullying and harassment at the hands of the British public and press. Everything from her American origins to her mixed-race heritage has been weaponized to use against her. Though she tried to live up to her end of the bargain, nothing she ever did was good enough for the Brits, so she and Prince Harry resigned from the royal roles

Now, the Sussexes are living very low-key lives in North America where they are focused on parenting their infant son, Archie Harrison, and building their charity. Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped the bullying Markle has had to endure.

Meghan Markle has been villainized in the British media

From the moment her relationship with Prince Harry became public knowledge — the Duchess of Sussex has been villainized in the media by the British press and public. Nothing she did was ever good enough. The tabloids and newspapers said she dressed too provocatively compared to her sister-in-law, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Markle was mom-shamed for holding her baby “wrong” and then when she tried to be vulnerable in an ITV documentary: Harry and Meghan: An African Journey she was told she complained too much. It was sexist, racist and terrible.

All women lose when women’s lives are boiled down to these simple binaries: selfless mother against ruthless careerist,” Helen Lewis wrote in The Atlantic, “Meghan is a mother too. Kate has political interests, such as mental health and early-childhood education…Not everything they do is “sending a signal” or “making a statement”; some of their personal choices are just that: personal choices.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took their lives back

One of the major reasons the Sussexes have resigned as senior working royals is to take the narrative of their lives back. Shortly after Megixt, Prince Harry gave a speech at the Sentebale Charity when he explained the Sussexes strained relationship with the media.

“The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” he said. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option. You’ve looked out for me for so long, but the media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.”

On their website, the duke and duchess also revealed they will no longer be working with the Royal Rota system which has been in place for decades and gives UK print and broadcast media exclusive inside access to the official engagements of members of the Royal Family. The Sussexes explained,

[They] chosen to revise their media policy to reflect both their forthcoming change as members of the Royal Family with financial independence, and their wish to reshape and broaden access to their work.

Meghan Markle has been deleting nasty comments on the Sussex Royal Instagram account

Though the Royal Family revised its social media policy after the influx of hate against Markle, the duchess has taken things a step further. People have been flooding the Sussex Royal Instagram page with nasty hurtful comments to express their ire at the Sussexes’s paid JP Morgan appearance.

Thankfully, the couple isn’t standing for it, and they’ve been deleting nasty and bullying comments. One person commented, “She seduced him. She brainwashed him. She controlled him. She drove him out of his mind. He no longer has an identity of his own. She turned him into a carbon copy of herself. She betrayed him and the whole Royal Family.”

Another wrote, “She has a new job of deleting comments.”

It’s so obvious why the Sussexes decided Megixt was their best course of action and why they are no longer adopting the stiff upper lip stance.
