Prince Harry and Meghan announced their exit

It seemed to come out of left field, but in January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan announced their plans to “step back” from their royal duties. It was initially unclear what that meant until the queen met with Prince Harry, Prince William, and Prince Charles to finalize the agreement — Harry and Meghan would give up their HRH titles and any public funding and make the move to Canada with their son Archie.

Prince Harry and Meghan shared their intentions with their Instagram followers: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

Queen Elizabeth noted her support of their plans in a statement that shared, in part: “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”

She added: “It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

Meghan found the situation ‘complicated’

It was evident that royal life wasn’t always easy for Meghan, as she faced constant public and media scrutiny after she married Prince Harry.

During an emotional interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan remarked how she wasn’t prepared for the level of harassment she would face.

Meghan shared: “When I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”

She called the situation “complicated,” noting: “The biggest thing that I know is that I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair and that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile.”

Meghan’s friend claims she escaped a ‘soul crushing’ environment

A close friend of Meghan’s shared some of the details of what Meghan has experienced. “Meghan felt she had to escape because living within the royal confines was soul crushing,” her pal told Daily Mail.

Her friend further explained how Meghan can “finally breathe” now that she’s officially left her royal duties. “She told her inner circle of friends that her soul was being crushed and that the decision to leave was a matter of life or death — meaning the death of her spirit,” her friend shared.

The insider added: “She also felt like she couldn’t be the best mother to Archie if she wasn’t being her true, authentic self. Something she felt she couldn’t be in the royal family confines.”

Additionally, the pal noted: “She said she didn’t want Archie picking up on her stress and anxiety. She felt like it was a toxic environment for him because there was too much tension and pent-up frustrations.”
