Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement on Nov. 27, 2017, and the two are set to be married on May 19, 2018. But long before she was preparing for life as a royal, Markle was very focused on getting into the entertainment industry.

She auditioned for and applied for several jobs in TV prior to landing the role of Rachel Zane on USA Network’s Suits. Here’s more on the other shows Markle worked on — including the one she applied for with an outspoken host who just made a backhanded remark about the soon-to-be-royal.

Markle retires from acting for royal duties

Following her engagement news, Markle announced that she would be stepping away from acting and leaving the show she has starred on since 2011 to focus on royal duties.

“What’s been so exciting [transitioning] out of my career and into … the causes I can focus even more energy on, very early out of the gate, have a voice that people listen to, a lot of responsibility,” Markle said in a joint interview with Harry.
