Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement on Nov. 27, 2017, and the two are set to be married on May 19, 2018. But long before she was preparing for life as a royal, Markle was very focused on getting into the entertainment industry.
She auditioned for and applied for several jobs in TV prior to landing the role of Rachel Zane on USA Network’s Suits. Here’s more on the other shows Markle worked on — including the one she applied for with an outspoken host who just made a backhanded remark about the soon-to-be-royal.
Markle retires from acting for royal duties
Following her engagement news, Markle announced that she would be stepping away from acting and leaving the show she has starred on since 2011 to focus on royal duties.
“What’s been so exciting [transitioning] out of my career and into … the causes I can focus even more energy on, very early out of the gate, have a voice that people listen to, a lot of responsibility,” Markle said in a joint interview with Harry.

Before Suits, Markle had small parts in TV and films
As is the case with many actors, Markle had small parts in everything from soap operas to crime dramas to comedies before she landed her big break.
Back in 2002, Markle appeared as a background character named Jill on General Hospital. From there she had other minor roles in The CW’s 90210, CSI: NY, Without a Trace, Fringe, CSI: Miami, Castle, and Horrible Bosses to name a few.
Next: She also appeared on this popular game show.
She was a briefcase model on Deal or No Deal
Remember Deal or No Deal? Markle had a gig as one of the “briefcase girls” on the game show.
The future royal once spoke to Esquire about her time on the program saying that “working on Deal or No Deal was a learning experience, and it helped me to understand what I would rather be doing. I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down.”

Markle had starring role in an independent film
Markle had another major role she can add to her acting credits besides Suits. In 2015, she starred in the independent film titled Anti-Social. The bride-to-be played a woman named Kirsten in a relationship with a street artist, Dee, who is involved in a life of crime and high society.
Ironically the movie was filmed in London, the city she will soon call home with her fiancé and future in-laws.

She applied for a job on The Wendy Williams Show
Before Suits came along the bride-to-be applied for a job to work on The Wendy Williams Show. In December 2017, the host revealed that Markle had applied for a position to work on the program. “She came here to Wendy to find out what she could do here,” Williams explained. “She’s been here, she’s been in our building, we have her DNA.”
Williams reiterated that while interviewing Markle’s former 90210 co-star, AnnaLynne McCord, in February 2018. “She applied for a job here too, yeah,” Williams stated, before adding, “Random princess.”
Next: Williams suggested Markle’s just an opportunist.
Williams dubbed Markle a ‘wild card’
While she admitted that she does “respect” Markle, Williams called her a “wild card.”
“I respect Meghan Markle’s hustle and I respect her game. However, she’s a bit of a wild card, you know, because she goes from being the Deal Or No Deal girl, so this is a girl looking for game,” Williams said.

Markle and her former Suits co-star spoke in code about Harry
Over on another daytime talk show, Markle’s on-screen dad, Wendall Pierce, confessed that he knew Markle was dating Harry and that they used to speak in code about the prince. “We always talked about him in code really,” Pierce told Harry Connick Jr. on his talk show. “You know, ‘How you doing?’ Oh I’m going to London, coming from London,’ whatever.”
Pierce also spoke about the last scene he filmed with Markle and what he said to her, telling Connick Jr., “It was just she and I in the room and I said, ‘I know your life is going to change but always know, no matter where you are, I will always be your loving fake father.'”
