Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have changed the course of their lives forever. Though the power couple had been a modern force in the uber-traditional British Royal Family — the U.K. press and public could not get over the fact that Markle was a mix-raced American woman.

Though she seems by all accounts to be a perfectly lovely woman, Markle had been subjected to all kinds of bullying and harassment by the British media. Since the royals have a policy of having, “a stiff upper lip” they also weren’t allowed to defend themselves.

After two years of enduring this kind of behavior, the Sussexes decided that they’d had enough. In a move that shocked the world, the duo decided to step down as working members of the royal family. However, the remaining members of the royal family aren’t so sure this will be a permanent decision.

Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new life in Canada

Though the Sussexes initially said they would be splitting their time between Canada and the U.K.– since they are no longer working royals, it appears they will be living in Canada on a more permanent basis. Though they haven’t found a home base just yet, we do know that they have been living in a rented mansion on the picturesque Vancouver Island.

Apparently, this is the happiest Markle has been in a long time. “She doesn’t come from millions,” an insider told US Weekly. “She’s worked hard to get to where she is today. Meghan loves the idea of being the breadwinner. She has no plans to do another show like Suits, but Harry’s been encouraging her to do more voice-over work, writing, producing and directing in her free time.” They also said that Prince Harry is looking forward to this new life chapter.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new roles are on a trial basis

Though it seems pretty permanent to us, it looks like these new roles for the Sussexes have been subjected to a year-long trial period. When their new roles were announced, Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties.   With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.”

However, a royal insider gave People a bit more context, “The new changes — which will take effect in Spring 2020 will last for a year, at which point the royal family will revisit the arrangement,” they explained.

The British royal family is convinced Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may return one day

Though the Sussexes appear to be pleased with their new lives — the royals are concerned they don’t know what they’ve gotten themselves into. Becoming financially independent is one thing, but Canada does not have the same privacy laws as the U.K.

“The palace is very worried about the Sussexes because they are vulnerable outside the embrace of the family,” an insider told The Sunday Times. “They are making contingency plans in case the Sussexes suddenly turn round and say: ‘Can we come back under your wing?’ You could bring them back to Frogmore to look after them. They wouldn’t return to royal duties, but they could have a period of rehabilitation and recuperation.”

It would have been nice if the royals were more proactive when Markle was being hounded and bullied.
