Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Relationship

When it comes to relationships, royal couples are typically good at hiding their private lives from the public (and the media). But, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship is different. Not only have the two been open about their life together, but they have also created a partnership and bond worthy of a Disney fairytale. As they head into a new season of their life, we take a look back at their relationship, including how they met and where they fell in love.

Here’s an inside look at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship before baby.

They met on a blind date

According to their engagement interview, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. “We met for a drink,” Meghan shared with BBC. “And then I think very quickly into that we said, ‘Well what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again,” she concluded.

It was love at first sight

After announcing their engagement, reporters asked Prince Harry when he knew Meghan Markle was the one. Without skipping a beat, his response was “the very first time we met.”

They ran away to Africa shortly after meeting

Shortly after their first date, Prince Harry invited Meghan Markle on a trip to Africa. The two got to spend some much-needed alone time, which ultimately was the foundation of their relationship. The duke and duchess allegedly fell in love on this trip.

They had a long-distance dating relationship

When they met, Harry was living in London and Meghan was living in Toronto, where she worked as an actress on the show Suits. For the first year of their relationship (and even beyond that) the two had a long distance relationship and spent time in both cities together. Harry and his cousin, Princess Eugenie (and her then-fiancé, Jack Brooksbank) even made a trip out to Toronto for Halloween one year. The four allegedly went to a house party in their Halloween disguises.

Meghan shut down her social media and blog

As their relationship grew deeper, Meghan Markle made the decision to shut down her social media accounts and beloved lifestyle blog, The Tig. You might wonder what this has to do with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship. And while it might seem small, the gesture was an indication to the public that things between her and Harry were getting much more serious and an engagement could be in the near future — and, it was!

Their engagement

Months after she shut down her blog and social media, the palace announced Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement. Harry popped the question in their Kensington Palace home over a roast chicken — aka, engagement chicken.

Meghan accompanied Harry on official business

In the months leading up to their royal wedding, Meghan began her royal training. And while that is traditionally done behind closed doors, she and Harry bent the rules and attended official engagements together — something Kate Middleton didn’t do until after she married Prince William.

They married at Windsor Castle

In May 2018, the royal couple said their “I do’s” at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. Following their ceremony, the newlyweds shared their first kiss on the steps of the chapel, then went for a carriage ride around the town of Windsor. They then celebrated with guests back at the castle at a lunchtime reception, followed by an evening reception at Frogmore House.

They have a high rank in the royal family

Upon their marriage, the queen named Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan is the first royal to hold the Duchess of Sussex title, as the previous Duke of Sussex’s marriages were not approved by the king. In the royal family, a dukedom is the highest ranking title (aside from king or queen), which makes Harry and Meghan prominent members.

A royal baby

Months after their royal wedding, the palace announced a new royal baby on the way. On the morning of their first royal tour together, the couple broke the news of their pregnancy. Meghan is due in spring 2019.
