Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Time Cover Could Cause a ‘Transatlantic Popularity Contest’ With Kate Middleton and Prince William, According to a Royal Expert

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe says Kate Middleton and Prince William are in 'danger of being dragged into a transatlantic popularity contest' following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Time cover.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex are on the cover of Time. So what does that mean for Harry’s brother, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his sister-in-law, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge? It could put the two couples in a “transatlantic popularity contest,” according to a royal expert.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are on the cover of Time’s 100 Most Influential People issue

Time unveiled its annual list of the most influential people in the world on Harry’s birthday, September 15. Featured on the list? None other than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Called icons, chef and humanitarian José Andrés wrote a short profile on Meghan and Harry. He described them as people who “run toward the struggle.”

Not only that but the couple also appeared on one of seven covers. They posed for photos at their sprawling home in Montecito, Calif. Despite people making fun of the cover online, it marks a major moment for Meghan and Harry. It’s the first time they’ve formally posed together for a magazine cover.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe spoke with OK! after the release of Meghan and Harry’s Time cover. The author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, discussed what the cover could mean for Catherine and William. As a result of the cover, the couples, according to Larcombe, could battle it out to see who is more popular.

“Kate and William are in danger of being dragged into a transatlantic popularity contest,” Larcombe said. “They will feel anxious over the cover and everything Harry and Meghan do.” Why? Because “it always seems to reflect on them.”

He continued, saying it’s normal for William and Catherine to get nervous when Harry and Meghan make headlines stateside.

“William and Kate are concerned about absolutely everything that comes out of America in regards to Harry and Meghan,” Larcombe said. “Especially Harry’s tell-all warts and all memoir that’s gonna hit the shelves sometime next year.”

“They have no control over the narrative,” he added.

It appears to be business as usual for the Sussexes and the Cambridges

Although Harry and Meghan’s Time cover may start a popularity contest it seems everything is business as usual. In the days after the magazine hit shelves, William and Catherine have carried on with their royal duties. The Duke of Cambridge announced the finalists for the Earthshot Prize, an environmental initiative he unveiled in 2019. Meanwhile, Catherine’s returned to the spotlight after not being seen in public for months.

As for Harry and Meghan, they’re making an appearance at Global Citizen Live in New York on September 25. They will, according to Vanity Fair, urge the European Union and G7 to donate doses of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine to struggling countries.
