Meghan Markle Thought Prince William Would Grill Her When They First Met, Book Says
When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex met Prince Harry on a blind date in London during the summer of 2016 she had no idea what to expect. Though she was aware of the prince’s royal status, she had no clue about the impact or visibility of the British royal family.
As she prepared to meet the royals some months later, the duchess suddenly realized how much that would mean. Though she was assured in herself and in her burgeoning romance with the smitten prince, she thought she would have to work hard to impress the senior royals, especially once particular royal.
While most people would assume that the most nerve-wracking meeting for Meghan would be her introduction to Queen Elizabeth II, she was actually more trepidations about Prince William. After all, Prince Harry and his older brother, the future Crowed King, were super close their whole lives.
Prince William and Kate Middleton were always distant toward Meghan Markle
During her BBC engagement interview with Prince Harry in November 2017, Meghan gushed about how friendly the Cambridges treated her upon their first meeting.
“It was exciting,” Prince Harry told BBC. “I mean, I’ve, you know, I’d been seeing her for a period of time when I literally didn’t tell anybody at all. And then William was longing to meet her and so was Catherine, so you know being our neighbors we managed to get that in a couple of — well, quite a few times now and Catherine has been absolutely…” “Wonderful,” Meghan added. However, that excitement did not last as the Cambridges kept Meghan at an arm’s length moving forward. An insider revealed in Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie’s Finding Freedom,
Despite the fact that Harry was a regular guest in her household Kate seemingly didn’t care to get to know who this woman was who had made her brother-in-law so happy. The Duchess of Cambridge is an extremely guarded person. Meghan was disappointed that she and Kate hadn’t bonded over the unique position they shared and that Catherine felt they did not have much in common other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace.
Prince William warned Prince Harry about Meghan Markle
In fact, though Prince William and Kate were very polite to Meghan upon meeting her, Prince William issued a warning to his brother about the Suits actor that would change the course of their relationship forever.
According to sources quoted in Finding Freedom, Prince William told Prince Harry,
‘Don’t feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.’ Prince Harry felt that there was a tone of snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world from his own brother.
Royal expert Ingrid Seward told US Magazin, “It was all so quick that William and Kate didn’t have a moment to get to know Meghan because Harry hardly knew Meghan.”
Meghan Markle expected Prince William to grill her when they were first introduced
Since the romance did move so quickly, Meghan fully anticipated pushback from the royals, especially Prince William but it never came — at least not to her face.
According to Finding Freedom via US Weekly, Meghan told a friend she “prepared herself for a grilling” during the introduction. Instead, Prince William gave her a warm greeting.
He reportedly said, “I was looking forward to meeting the girl who has put that silly grin on my brother’s face.” Unfortunately, the duo’s relationship never went much further than that.
