The Sweet Way Meghan Markle Honors Princess Diana

Meeting the parents is an important step in every committed couple’s journey. Getting to know (and hopefully love) the people who could one day serve as your in-laws is a rite of passage that often occurs when a couple is very serious about each other. Unfortunately, this was not something that Meghan Markle got to experience. Because of Prince Diana’s tragic accident, the Duchess of Sussex never had the opportunity to meet Prince Harry’s mother or introduce her to their son, baby Archie. But, despite never having met the princess of the people, Markle still goes out of her way to honor the beloved royal in this sweet way.

Earlier this month, Markle made her second post-baby appearance when she attended the annual Trooping the Colour. Whilst riding in a carriage with her husband, Prince Harry, the former actress waved elegantly to fans whilst sporting a stunning, navy, Givenchy outfit. Hawkeye fans were quick to notice that there were a few things that were different about Markle as the Duchess was seen wearing some new and updated jewelry.

Ring

The first thing fans noted was that Markle was sporting a new ring. In addition to her wedding band and beautiful engagement ring, she also donned a third ring that was completely unfamiliar to fans. This delicate gold ring, known as a pave-set-ring, is thought to be an eternity ring. Traditionally eternity rings are given to mark a big anniversary for a couple, or after the birth of a couple’s first child (which is likely the case for Markle). Signifying everlasting love between a couple, they are a common tradition amongst many in the royal family.

Redesign

But that wasn’t the only new piece of jewelry that the Duchess of Sussex showed off that day. There were also some serious updates made to her engagement ring. The once yellow gold band (which Harry insisted in the couple’s first post-engagement interview was Markle’s favorite) has been replaced with a slimmer band that is comprised of small diamonds. The updated ring suits the Duchess even more, as she is known to favor dainty jewelry. But, there’s one important element of the original ring that we’re glad Markle kept.

Princess Diana

What many fans don’t know is that part of Markle’s engagement ring is comprised of diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal jewelry collection. While Prince Harry sourced the main stone from Botswana, the two surrounding diamonds are a way for the couple to honor the late and great Princess Diana. “The little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this — on this crazy journey together,” Prince Harry said of the ring design shortly after the couple announced their engagement.

Honored in life and death

Markle certainly swooned over the sweet gesture and praised her then-fiance for his level of attention to detail when creating a special ring for her. “Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of (Princess Diana’s) stones and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us” Markle gushed.

Despite Princess Diana’s untimely death, her legacy lives on. It’s beautiful to see that Markle honors the memory of her late mother-in-law each and every day through her ring.
