Meghan Markle suffered suicidal thoughts while in the royal family

In Meghan’s interview with Oprah, she claims that she didn’t want to be alive anymore due to the constant attacks she was facing from the media. “I just didn’t see a solution,” she tells Oprah. “I would sit up at night, and I was just, like, I don’t understand how all of this is being churned out,” she said, referring to the endless press scrutiny. “I realized that it was all happening just because I was breathing. I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because I know how much loss he’s suffered. But I knew that if I didn’t say it, that I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

“It’s so important for people to remember that you have no idea what’s going on for someone behind closed doors,” she says. “You have no idea. Even the people that smile the biggest smiles and shine the brightest lights.”

But in the end, speaking out about her feelings turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to her. “It takes so much courage to admit that you need help,” says Meghan. “It takes so much courage to voice that. As I said, I was ashamed. I’m supposed to be stronger than that. I don’t want to put more on my husband’s shoulders. He’s carrying the weight of the world.”

Ever since their departure from the royal family, Meghan claims that she and her husband Harry are “thriving.”

You’ve got to thrive, you’ve got to feel happy. I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried. But I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.”
