Once upon a time Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge along with Prince Harry and his bride Meghan, Duchess of Sussex were dubbed “The Fab Four.” But things between the couples weren’t how they appeared.

It wasn’t until Harry and Meghan announced that they were leaving their royal roles and the U.K., that fans learned just how fractured their relationship was.

Meghan Markle’s relationship with Kate Middleton

For a while, everything appeared fine between the duchesses but after Megxit tidbits about their first meeting came to light. And that’s when reports swirled that things were pretty awkward from the beginning.

The day the ladies met the former Suits star decided to give Kate a present since it was right around her 35th birthday and gifted her a dream journal. A number of royal watchers deemed that gift inappropriate to give the future queen consort.

Vanity Fair writers Josh Duboff and Julie Miller chatted about it on their In the Limelight podcast. They called the gift “bohemian” and that it seemed more like something Meghan would purchase for herself since she enjoys writing and had a blog.

The Daily Mirror’s Polly Hudson agreed that Meghan shouldn’t have given Kate such a gift because of how much work logging a dream journal can be. Hudson then said that giving a present like that was a “passive-aggressive” move by Meghan.

Meghan Markle’s relationship with Prince William

There isn’t much known about if Meghan and her brother-in-law ever bonded at all. But multiple reports suggested they did not as William was always concerned with how fast things were moving after Harry and Meghan began dating.

It’s been claimed that the rift between the brothers began when the younger prince talked to William about his relationship and the future king referred to Meghan as “this girl” saying, “Don’t feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”

Even though William may not have had any bad intentions with that advice his words infuriated Harry.

Commentator Dan Wooton told True Royalty TV that he believes the relationship with William and Kate wasn’t what Meghan wanted so she orchestrated the split between Harry and the rest of his family.

“She falls out with virtually anyone who she’s close to, including her own blood relatives,” Wootton stated (per Express). “So it’s not a surprise that she engineered a split between Harry and the people he has been the closest to and relied on for his whole life. He was so close to William and so close to Kate.”

Wooton then backpedaled a bit by adding: “I’m not saying that you can blame Meghan specifically for the breakdown in that relationship. I think both couples rubbed each other up the wrong way from the start.”

Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter agreed and opined that Harry had been content in his role of “spare” but it was Meghan who wasn’t willing to accept it.

“Their world was their oyster and [the Sussexes] blew it,” Arbiter said. “They literally blew it, they had everything, I don’t think everything was what Meghan wanted. Harry was the spare and the Cambridges are the heirs. He accepted his role, he was always born to that. Until Meghan came along and she could not accept that. She couldn’t accept being in the second row.”
