Meghan Markle aka the Duchess of Sussex is known for a lot of things. She was an iconic member on the TV series Suits, before rising to royalty. She’s the controversial Duchess that the internet loves, and loves to hate. She’s a stellar sister-in-law to the Duchess of Cambridge, a loving wife to Prince Harry, a fantastic Patron, and a soon-to-be mother. She wears many hats, but there’s one title that is lesser known — expert gift-giver.

The Royal Family isn’t allowed to keep every gift

For those of you who don’t know, the royal family has a gift policy. But that brings up a great question. What happened to all the great wedding gifts Prince Harry and Markle received? The couple did request that guests donate to charities of their choice, but of course, some people can’t shake old habits! While certain gifts can be kept, many of them need to be put through a specific protocol.

Fans shower the royal family with gifts every day; this holds especially true for special events such as a birth or wedding. While they are given gifts during public appearances, tons of gifts also get mailed directly to the palace. Need an example? There were an impressive 4,200 gifts sent to the palace in celebration of Prince William’s birth.

Considering the royal rules, Markle’s creative gift ideas come in handy when shopping for her royal family.

Meghan Markle’s sole gift-giving tip

The Duchess used to have a lifestyle blog, The Tig. One of the posts shared secrets on how she liked to select gifts for her loved ones. In her words, “Instead, give him something creative that he’ll actually enjoy.” This is opposed to something basic like a t-shirt that most women would end up stealing anyway.

For Prince Harry’s 34th birthday, Markle went to the drawing board for her gift planning. The two happen to have a history of spoiling each other with tastefully selected gifts. While details about the exact gift remain unknown, it’s clear the Duchess put’s a lot of thought into her gift choices.

Markle got creative for Kate Middleton’s gift

The Duchess of Sussex also channeled her expert gift getter for her sister-in-law’s gift during her and Prince Harry’s royal wedding. Markle and Middleton may be cut from different clothes, but they are two women with just the right amount of things in common. They are both non-royals who wed into the royal family. They are big philanthropists. Middleton even helped her sister-in-law adjust to royal life. Being so close, it’s no surprise the former Suits star selected a meaningful gift for her sister-in-arms.

The blushing bride gave her new sister-in-law a custom Zofia Day Company piece — A Kensington bracelet. Only Middleton and six close friends received this particular gift, a showing of solidarity and friendship. Despite rumors of the two being at odds, it’s clear they have a blossoming relationship in the works.

So what’s Markle’s idea of the best birthday gift?

When Markle was 33 years old, she wrote the most thought-provoking post ever. It was her birthday, and she revealed to the world that she was happy. The former actress went on to describe how both her teen years and twenties were brutal. She was in a constant battle, like many others, trying to figure out how to keep up with the trendy, hip, and cool people around her.

In her mid-20s a casting director shared some words of wisdom that stuck with her “You need to know that you’re enough. Less makeup, more Meghan.” The mantra, you need to know that you’re enough, is now something she reflects on every day.

So when reaching out to her fans, she asked them to elevate to that level of acceptance. As a birthday gift, she wanted them to be kind to themselves. But that’s not all. She wanted her fans to find happiness because when she found it, it was the best feeling in the world. While Markle may get a lot of slack, she’s clearly worthy of being a Duchess due to her care and compassion.
