It has been a romance that has rivaled that of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco. American actress, Meghan Markle, a philanthropist and woman of color from California has fallen in love with Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales, and the world couldn’t be more ecstatic.
After a year-and-a-half romance, the pair wed on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. It was one of the biggest events of the year. From their initial photos together at the Invictus Games in the fall of 2017 to their stunning engagement photos and adorable interview, the couple seems perfect for one another.
However, their romance almost never happened. The former Suits actress initially thought things with her prince were moving way too fast.
A surprising blind date
We all know that blind dates can go left fast, which is why Markle thought nothing of it when her friend Violet Von Westenholz asked to set her up with a mysterious friend. That friend happened to be our favorite red-headed prince.
According to Andrew Morton’s book, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Markle and Prince Harry met at one of London’s Soho House branches. Apparently, the date was so delightful, that Prince Harry immediately asked to see Markle again the next day and she readily accepted.
Next: Looking for different things
Coming from different places
When Markle and Prince Harry met, the former actress was visiting London to do press for Suits, and according to Morton, she had just recently broken things off with Canadian chef and restauranteur Cory Vitiello, whom she also lived with.
Prince Harry, on the other hand, had long ago let go of his playboy past. After seeing how happy and content, his brother, Prince William, is with his wife, Duchess Kate Middleton, and their kids, he was focusing more on settling down.
Next: Nothing serious at first
Just a fun night
When Markle agreed to the date, she had no idea who she was meeting or what she was signing up for. In fact, the fun-loving beauty was merely looking forward to a fun night out on the town. According to Morton, Markle had lunch with her friend Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne the day of the date and confided in her about how she was feeling.
Nelthorpe-Cowne told The Daily Mail, “I jokingly asked if she knew what she was letting herself in for and she said: “Well, it’s going to be an experience and at least it will be a fun night.”
Next: Questioning herself
Saying yes to soon
Soon after leaving that initial date, Markle was already apprehensive that things were moving faster then she wanted them too. Morton explained, “Meghan wondered if she had been too eager to accept his invitation to meet again the following day.”
However, we suppose since she was visiting and was also balancing work obligations, she decided to show up anyways.
Next: A magical trip after two dates
A massive leap of faith
After just two dates in London, Markle agreed to take a massive leap of faith and meet Prince Harry halfway around the world in Botswana, a country she had never visited before.
Morton wrote in US Today, “She had to pinch herself. Here she was about to travel halfway around the world to spend five days in a tented camp in the middle of nowhere with a man she had met twice.”
Though the trip was obviously a massive risk, in the end, it’s what sealed the couple’s bond.
Next: Botswana forever
On cloud nine
It was that magical trip to Botswana that squashed any of Markle’s doubt about the prince or that their relationship might be moving too fast.
Nelthorpe-Cowne told Daily Mail, “I’m sure that the Botswana trip is what clinched the deal. When they were back, she showed me the most wonderful photographs of the two of them on her phone. They were so clearly already in love. She told me it was serious and they had started discussing the future. She said they’d said to each other: ‘We’re going to change the world.’”
Next: All of the sacrifices
Still, despite finding the love of her life, Markle has certainly had a ton to deal with when it comes to the glaring spotlight and all of the rules and regulations that come with being a royal. Luckily, in the midst of the whirlwind and leading up to their big day, both Markle and her prince are enjoying some much earned time off.
According to People, “[The couple] do not have any public duties or outings scheduled on their royal calendar until the big day. They will continue to have briefings, visits, and meetings — but they will all be private.”
We hope they enjoy a nice long honeymoon as well.
Next: The perfect timing
Worth the wait
Less than two years after they first met, Markle and Prince Harry are walking down the aisle. It will be the second marriage for Markle was married to Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013. However, it seems that the stunning pair waited for the perfect time in their lives to find one another.
Morton describes it as “a sliding doors moment, because Harry, 10 years ago, he was falling out of bars drunk, picking fights with paparazzi. The queen would have looked at Meghan and thought, ‘American divorcee?! Let’s think again, Harry.'”
We just can’t wait to see what this new royal era will bring.
