More than a decade after starring in The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep remains popular for the fan-favorite flick. She starred as the movie’s antagonist, Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of a fashion publication based on Anna Wintour and Vogue. Streep took on the role amazingly, bringing the character to life in a way that no one else could. Given her previous successes, it didn’t come as much of a surprise.

As one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, Streep makes a lot of money per film. But many fans don’t realize that she made $4 million from The Devil Wears Prada after turning down a lower offer.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ was a huge success

Many fans are well aware that The Devil Wears Prada was based on Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel of the same name. With its amazing cast, pleasing visuals, and unique storyline, it is no wonder that it was such a box office smash. So much so, that The Washington Post says that it is one movie that was actually better than the book for several reasons.

The publication notes that the characters were likable, the ending was better than the written version, and there is a bit more drama in the movie than in the book. The movie brought in a whopping $326.7 million dollars at the box office.

Streep has been in the entertainment industry for decades. She’s an icon for many. And when a celebrity is that good, they know the value they bring to the table, and won’t settle for anything less. Which is just what Streep did with The Devil Wears Prada.

According to Biography, she was everyone’s first choice to play the role of Priestly. After reading the script, Streep knew the movie would be a success. She was offered quite a nice amount of money to star in the film: $2 million. But she actually found that to be offensive. “The offer was to my mind slightly, if not insulting, not perhaps reflective of my actual value to the project,” the actor said.

Film executives knew that they needed Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada. So they doubled her salary to $4 million dollars, which she accepted. This was four times the amount of her co-star, Anne Hathaway. The lead received her first $1 million paycheck for her role in the film, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
