Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ is a Netflix original documentary
Through her many initiatives in the White House, Michelle Obama left her mark on the American people and the country as a whole. She inspired other women to reach for their goals, and be kind to one another which her signature quote, “when they go low, we go high.” No medium explores that more than her memoir, Becoming, and the recently released documentary of the same title.
In it, viewers saw Michelle Obama talking with young students and even touching on her life before her husband became the President of the United States. The documentary, Becoming, explores the former First Lady’s “complicated legacy,” in her own words.
This special premiered on the streaming platform, Netflix, and became one of the most-watched specials of the week during May 2020. Now, some Disney+ and Hulu subscribers are wondering how they can stream it.
Is ‘Becoming’ available on other streaming platforms, like Hulu and Disney+?
After weeks of waiting, (and technically years of waiting for fans of the book,) Becoming became available for streaming on Netflix on May 6. Because this is a Netflix exclusive, it’s pretty safe to assume it won’t appear on other streaming platforms.
Becoming is not listed on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney+. If you want to watch the documentary, heading to Netflix is your best bet. This documentary comes hot off the heels of other Netflix-exclusive specials by prominent women in the entertainment industry. That includes Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé and Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana.
‘Becoming’ was first a best-selling autobiography
This would be the first project created in conjunction with Michelle Obama’s best-selling book of the same title. The memoir, first published in 2018, earned the former First Lady the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album, amongst other recognitions. The Netflix special, however, is the first time viewers experience the stories of this autobiography firsthand.
“Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with,” Obama wrote on Instagram.
“I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty,” she continued.
