While Stevie Nicks’ relationship with Lindsey Buckingham is a major part of Fleetwood Mac’s history, she also had a relatively serious affair with Mick Fleetwood. It didn’t end well, but she has described him as one of the great loves of her life. He feels similarly. Years after their romance, when he was married, Fleetwood said that he still thought of Nicks as a soulmate.

Stevie Nicks said her affair with Mick Fleetwood was a mistake

Nicks and Fleetwood began their affair while she was with Don Henley and he was married to Jenny Boyd. She believes it would never have happened without drugs and alcohol.

“Mick and I would never have had an affair had we not had a party and all been completely drunk and messed up and coked out, and, you know, ended up being the last two people at the party,” she said for Oprah’s Master Class. “So guess what? It’s not hard to figure out what happened — and what happened wasn’t a good thing. It was doomed. It was a doomed thing, caused a lot of pain for everybody, led to nothing.”

Their relationship came to a dramatic end when Fleetwood started a relationship with Nicks’ close friend. Nicks was not happy about the betrayal.

“We weren’t talking to each other very much,” she Mojo in 2003, per The Nicks Fix. “We were there, but looking past each other. Everybody was nervous: ‘Is she going to burst into tears and leave?'”

He described her as a soulmate

These days, their relationship has healed, and the pair are friends. Fleetwood once said that the love he had for her lingered.

“In terms of our relationship with each other, we still have the same connection to this day; we just love each other in the true sense of the word, which transcends passion,” he wrote in his book Play On. “I will take my love for her as a person to my grave, because Stevie Nicks is the kind of woman who inspires that devotion.”

He also said he thought of her as a soulmate, even as he pursued other romantic connections.

“I went to Hawaii recently with my wife Lynn and our kids, and Stevie rented a house just down the road,” he told the Independent Review in 2003, per The Nicks Fix. “My wife is a soulmate, but Stevie is a soulmate, too, and Lynn knows that. There’s so much you can enjoy with that dynamic.”

Stevie Nicks once said she could see herself ending up with Mick Fleetwood

Nicks holds onto love for Fleetwood as well. Though the affair came to an acrimonious end, she once said she could see herself ending up with the Fleetwood Mac drummer.
